Seekonk candidates tape election debate

SEEKONK - Francis Cavaco and David Viera met this week to tape a debate at Cable 9 studios.

The two candidates are vying for the chance to fill the remainder of ex-Selectwoman Carol Bragg's term on the board.

The special election will be held Aug. 18.

The two candidates were cordial with one another during the 60-minute debate, which covered topics such as town spending and the need for more fire stations.

Cavco said his top priority would to be "to press for financial accountability and better fiscal controls townwide." Viera noted that the town would need to be more conservative in its spending in light of a faltering economy and reduced state aid.

"We're writing checks we can't cash," Viera said. "We need to start tightening our belts."

Air times and dates for the debate are 7 and 9 p.m. Tuesdays, 7 and 10 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m., 7 and 10 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays.
