Coakley will speak at Senior Law Day

ATTLEBORO - Attorney General Martha Coakley will be the guest speaker at the eighth annual Senior Law Day at the James H. Sullivan Courthouse next month.

The law day event, sponsored by Attleboro TRIAD and hosted by Attleboro District Court Judge Gregory L. Phillips, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sept. 26 at the courthouse at 88 North Main St.

Before Coakley was elected state attorney general in 2006, she was the Middlesex district attorney for eight years and has been in public service as a prosecutor for 20 years.

She began her legal career in 1979 in civil litigation for Boston law firms before joining the Middlesex District Attorney's Office in 1986.

She went to the U.S. Attorney's Office in 1987 before returning to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office two years later. She was chief of the child abuse unit, where she investigated and prosecuted hundreds of cases of physical and sexual abuse of children, including the high-profile Louise Woodward case.

During her tenure as district attorney, Coakley oversaw the successful prosecution of numerous high profile crimes, including the cases of several Catholic priests charged with sexually abusing children, and the prosecution of a Reading father who fatally beat another parent at a youth hockey practice.

As attorney general, she is the state's chief lawyer and law enforcement officer in criminal and civil areas of law, including crimes against senior citizens, consumer protection, fraud, civil rights, health care and insurance issues.

Light refreshments will be served at the event.

Seniors should preregister for the event by calling their local council on aging. Attleboro's is at 508-223-2235, North Attleboro's is at 508-699-0131, Norton's is at 508-285-0235 and Mansfield's is at 508-261-7368.
