Rising star Ferguson brings quirky style to Foxwoods

The Glasgow, Scotland-born host of the Late, Late Show on CBS appeared Saturday night at Fox Theater at Foxwoods after hosting the 35th annual Boston Pops Fourth of July fireworks celebration in Boston the night before.

Ferguson, 46, who recently became a U.S. citizen, is quite the storyteller in standup comedy, as he is on his TV show, spending a good amount of the Foxwoods performance recalling comical incidents of his past. Then again, the multi-talented Ferguson focuses on his interesting and diverse personal history on the Late, Late Show he took over hosting in January 2005. He is known for ad libbing his monologue.

"I can drive. I choose any side of the street I want," Ferguson joked.

He told of not realizing Scotti on Star Trek was supposed to be Scottish and how nobody in Scotland could understand him.

And Ferguson talked a lot about one of his heroes, Scottish-born Sean Connery - the original James Bond, and just one of the many characters he plays on his show in sketches. He told of delivering milk in his idol's footsteps. "Clearly this was a career path," he remarked. The twice-divorced Ferguson, who has a son, touched on a few comical tales of being in rehab for alcohol.

The quirky Ferguson also mocked Hollywood, where he lives. "The more successful you get, the crazier you get," he said.

Ferguson had his start on American TV on the Drew Carey Show, playing Carey's English boss from 1996 to 2003.

"It changed my life," Ferguson said, describing Carey, who now hosts "The Price is Right," as a "fantastic guy."

The host of this year's White House correspondents dinner, Ferguson a few months back surpassed Conan O'Brien in the ratings for the late night TV slot of 12:30 to 1:30 a.m.

Opening up for Ferguson was one of his writers, Randy Kagan, who joked he was the "canary in the coal mine" to feel out the audience for Ferguson.

"I just spent $3 on water. Doesn't that fall out of the sky for free," Kagan cracked.
