GOBIS: Norton members have pro's support

And at the Norton CC last weekend, Ryan Riley claimed the club championship with a 2 and 1 victory in the 18-hole match play title match over reigning AAGA Open champ Billy White. Riley bested Rob Butler in the semifinals, while White topped Ned Sweeney ... Another Norton happening - former Lancer football star Jon Norcott, entering his second season of football at Dean College in Franklin, captured the RAW National Powerlifting Meet in St. Louis with a 1,420-pound weight total. Under rules of competition, with minimal equipment, Norcott was tops in the 18-19 division and the 198-220 pound class, having a squat of 518 points, a deadlift of 600 pounds and a bench press of 302 (he fouled at 353 pounds). "Now I'm looking forward to this being my breakout year in football," said Norcott, who was a reserve running back and special-teams member last fall ... "We're going to re-live some of the glory days," said Bishop Feehan High track coach Bob L'Homme of the Shamrocks' Alumni Meet Saturday (3 p.m.) at McGrath Stadium. Over 100 former Shamrock track-athletes, including Mark Coogan, Joanne Zern, Brian Kelley and Maryanne Guillette, will be participating ... At the breakup dinner for the North Attleboro High softball team, Rocketeer coach Bill Wallace handed out the "Unsung Hero" award to right fielder Tracy Kokul, the "Most Improved" award to leftfielder Steph Ryan, the "Coaches Award" to Nicole Hardy, the "Teammate Award" to Toni Zagami, the "Golden Glove" award to Steph Brown, the "Silver Slugger" award to Steph Burns and the "Rocketeer" award to Brenna Johnson. Captains-elect for the 2009 team will be catcher Alicia Patalano and Brown ... Ed Moran's King Philip High baseball team allowed just 94 runs in 23 games this season, reaching the quarterfinals of the MIAA Division 2 Tournament and he has two top-flight pitchers back next season in Brandon Howard (6-1, 3.00 ERA) and Alec Palioca (4-1, 1.57 ERA). "That's a nice corps to start with," Moran said ... Former Bishop Feehan High outfielder Billy Cupelo of Franklin, a junior at Holy Cross, was one of 10 Crusaders named to the All Patriot League Academic All Star team ... Joe Annese, the former Attleboro High soccer great, now entering his junior season at the University of New Hampshire, has been playing at forward and at defense in 13 matches (two goals) for the USL's New Hampshire Phantom developmental team ... Former Bishop Feehan High and Boston College distance runner Mike Atwood is the new cross country coach at Foxboro High, taking over for Kevin Murphy. The North Attleboro resident has coached the distance runners over the past few years at Canton, Oliver Ames and Mansfield ... Former King Philip High softball standout Suzie Waters batted .390 with 20 hits, 12 RBI and 20 runs scored as a freshman centerfielder for the St. Joseph's (Connecticut) softball team (25-13) ... The American Hockey League is experimenting once again for the NHL. After adopting 4-on-4 overtime hockey, hurry-up faceoffs and the goalie no-play zone, the AHL will adopt "one-minute" penalties (instead of the customary two sin-bin minutes) for overtime ... For the second consecutive season, No. 1 singles player Will Condon and the doubles team of Jeremy Carroll and Jordan Sandberg will serve as tri-captains of the 2009 Mansfield High boys' tennis team. "We have high hopes for next season," said Hornet coach Dan Etter, who loses just his No. 2 doubles team in a senior-dominated Hockomock League ... Kelsey Nokes, who played at No. 1 doubles and in two matches at singles for Ray Kaiser's Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High girls' tennis team, will be the Falcon captain for 2009. And for Vic Augusto's Falcon boys' team, No. 1 singles player Nate Fuller will be a captain along with No. 3 singles player Nick Moniz and doubles player Tyler Snook ... King Philip High's superb soccer midfielder, Joel Diamond, was among the finalists for the New England Revolution's developmental under-18 team ... Captains-elect for the 2009 Attleboro High baseball team will be outfielder Dan Gelinas, shortstop Jesse Lee, centerfielder Ryan Cronin and pitcher-infielder-outfielder Connor Larkin.
