Students at Attleboro High launch own record label

There are many bands in the U.S. and not many make it big. So what happens to local bands who don't hit the road to Hollywood? Some fade away and break apart, others remain in the garages from whence they emerged, and the rest play small, local shows.

However, a select group of Attleboro High School students have found an alternative; they began their own record label. Junior Alexander Herbert took the initiative to start the label for his bands and the bands of his friends.

The label, which is named Incline Records, is home to local bands Del Monte Raid, Voice of NOW!, Acetone, The Nigel Krofta Band, and Cactus Attack. Three of these bands played at AHS's Battle of the Bands. In fact, Cactus Attack won second place this year and Del Monte Raid won first in 2007.

"There's so many different genres of music in southern Massachusetts, even Attleboro alone, and I (as well as my friends) felt that a good way to win fans of other bands and get them to hear local bands would be to start a common label," said Herbert.

His first band, Del Monte Raid, has been around since 2005. With a regular fan base, they spread out their talent. Lead singer Ryan Jackson, who also deals with recording for Incline, recorded his own songs with Cactus Attack, while drummer Herbert spoke out in his own band, the Voice of NOW!
Currently there are five bands on the label, but the process for getting onto Incline Records is pretty simple.

"If we, who own the label, think that the band has a good sound that our listeners can get into, then we accept them," said Herbert.

However, if a band is signed to Incline and plays a show not hosted by them, the band must make sure the record label is listed under the band name on the flyer. If the band fails to do so they are fined for 2 percent of the band's last sale.

Any artwork and music will be sold by Incline primarily off their Myspace (http:// www.myspace.com/inclinrecords). Five percent of the profit goes to Incline and the remaining 95 percent to the band. In addition, each band must promote other bands on the label at shows.

Incline Records is in the process of recording and releasing CDs from the bands. There are three CDs coming out soon: Killing the Country with Six Strings from Voice of NOW! and Cactus Attack, a self-entitled demo from the Nigel Krofta band, and a self-entitled one from Voice of NOW!

Merchandise is available both at shows and from the Incline Records Myspace.

Although Jackson announced that the show on May 9 was the last show for Cactus Attack, his songs will continue to be released and other bands on the label will continue to press onward and play local shows.

"Usually the bands are dependent on getting shows for themselves, but when we want to do something together we just simply call a venue and someone (usually me) puts money down," said Herbert. These shows usually bring in anywhere from $300-$1,200. Bands get 20 percent or a little less depending on the situation and amount made.

Though the shows are quite popular among Attleboro teens, the label isn't aiming to win fame.

"That's the last thing on my mind," said Herbert. "I just hope it lets the fans of one band hear others and spread the word."
