RI officials identify body as missing Rehoboth fisherman

REHOBOTH - The Rhode Island Medical Examiner's office Thursday positively identified the body pulled from a Tiverton, R.I., pond as that of a local man who had gone fishing with his girlfriend Sunday.

The cause of the death of Joseph Traficante, 38, of Tremont Street, was not determined and is pending further study, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office said on Thursday.

There were no obvious signs of trauma to the body when drivers found it Tuesday in about 20 feet of water.

The body was about 100 yards from the west shore of Stafford Pond, according to Gail Mastrati of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

Traficante was on the pond fishing with his fiancee, Brandi Hurst, around 7 p.m. Sunday and may have gotten out of the boat for a swim. Hurst called 911 on her cell phone when Traficante did not emerge from the water and attempted to find him, herself, before help arrived.

A veteran Tiverton firefighter Gerald Leduc, 52, who was off duty, died of a heart attack during the initial phase of the search.
