ATTLEBORO - A 67-year-old city man faces allegations he was trafficking in the powerful and addictive pain killers OxyContin after police and postal authorities capped a three-month investigation over the weekend.

Philip Rosenfield, 67, of 320 O'Neil Blvd., in Attleboro, was arrested Friday by city detectives working in conjunction with the Northern Bristol County Drug Task Force and the U.S. Postal Inspector's Office, police said Saturday.

Rosenfield was under investigation when authorities learned he was allegedly using the U.S. mail to obtain large amounts of OxyContin pills from Florida and intercepted a package during the probe, police said in a statement.

The package, which contained 484 OxyContin pills, was opened after investigators obtained a federal search warrant and then repackaged for delivery, according to police.

Detectives conducted surveillance and apprehended Rosenfield without incident as he accepted the package around 6:30 p.m. Friday, police said. At the time of his arrest, police learned a separate package was just sent by Rosenfield. The package was intercepted at the North Attleboro post office by Postal Inspector Stephen Dowd as part of the investigation, police said.

Police opened the package and found it contained $9,480 cash, which authorities allege was payment for the pills, said Attleboro Detective James Cote.

With that package, police seized a total of $12,453 cash and the pills, according to police.

The drug task force is comprised of detectives from Attleboro, Mansfield, Norton, Easton and Raynham.

Rosenfield was charged with trafficking in Class A narcotics, and trafficking in narcotics within 1,000 feet of a school or playground.

Bail for Rosenfield was set at $2,500 cash, pending arraignment in Attleboro District Court.
