NORTH ATTLEBORO - It's babies, babies everywhere at the World War I Memorial Park Zoo these days.

Baby chicks, piglets and a rooster have recently made the zoo their home.

The zoo acquired two baby Vietnamese potbellied pigs from the Southwick Zoo on June 27, when the piglets were just 5 weeks old. They join zoo-favorite Gunther the pig and have been adjusting well to their surroundings.

The piglets are both female, one is named Violet due to her blue eyes, and the other has been dubbed Charlotte, in a reference to the spider in E.B White's children's book classic, "Charlotte's Web."

"They're doing very well," said Zookeeper Coreen Crosta. "They are a little skittish around people, but they are getting better with it."

Four baby chicks will soon make their debut at the zoo. The four female chicks, who were provided by Attleboro's Old Barn, are named Sassy, Rosie, Vena and Stripes.

In addition, the zoo recently acquired an all-white baby rooster, named the Colonel, which was dropped off at the zoo by a local resident. All of the new animals are adjusting well to their surroundings, Crosta said.

A perfect time to check out the new arrivals will be during the zoo's End of the Summer Celebration, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, Crosta said. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature a number of activities including a moonwalk, pony rides, face-painting, games and a bake sale, with all proceeds going toward upkeep of the animals.

The zoo also is looking for donations for a yard sale fundraiser that will be held on Sept. 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents are asked to bring used items to the zoo, which will be sold at the yard sale.

Any items that are left unsold will be donated by the town to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
