Republicans, Democrats plan a diamond duel
Top Headlines Mansfield political committees are set to play a little softball
MANSFIELD - As their national counterparts gear up for presidential nominating conventions, two local political committees will be taking to the softball diamond to raise money for charity and have a little fun.The second annual "Duel on the Diamond," will see the Mansfield Democratic and Republican Town Committees put their differences aside for an afternoon of fun to benefit the Mansfield Food Pantry and a local veterans' group. "We want to do something good for the community and have some fun at the same time," said Olivier Kozlowski, chairman of the Republican committee. The game will take place on Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Qualters Middle School softball field. In the event of rain, the game will be pushed back to Aug. 24. In last year's game, the Republicans won with a walk-off, three-run home run. "We're looking to win," said Democratic committee Chairman David Martin. "Although, if we lose the game, but win the White House, that will be OK with us." This year's game will have a little added drama as both candidates for the Bristol and Norfolk District seat in the state Senate will be participating, with incumbent James Timilty expected to play for the Democrats and challenger Jon Rockwood expected to suit up for the Republicans. State Rep. Jay Barrows, R-Mansfield, is also expected to play for the Republicans, and Dave Dennis, who is running to become Bristol County's register of probate will be playing for the Democrats. Those looking to donate can make a contribution to the team or charity of their choice by contacting Kozlowski at 508-261-9254 or Martin at 508-339-7316. Donations also can be made at the field on game day or through any participating town committee members. Matt Kakley covers Mansfield for The Sun Chronicle.
