Wrentham police nab two in scheme

WRENTHAM - Two Florida men are suspected of making their own travelers checks and using them to purchase goods at several stores at Wrentham Village Premium Outlets as well as stores in Connecticut and Maine.

The scheme netted the suspects merchandise and also cash from change provided by the merchants where the fraudulent checks were passed, Detective Sgt. William McGrath said.

A joint investigation is being conducted by local police and the U.S. Secret Service, and the suspects citizenship is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration & Customs Enforcement, McGrath added.

The two men were arraigned Friday in Wrentham District Court after being arrested Thursday at the outlet mall on South Street (Route 1A), where they were charged with passing fraudulent travelers checks.

Police apprehended James Estime, 29, of Orlando, Fla. and Francois Thermitus Jr., 32, also of Orlando. Both were charged with forgery of travelers checks, uttering false travelers checks, and larceny over $250. The suspects were held on $10,000 bail before arraignment.

" jm: If you come across a likely news story in the future, whether at the outlets or elsewhere, could you drop us an e-mail or give us a call (I'm at 508-236-0335; I handle the editorial page and not the news, but I'll make sure any news tips go to the right place). Things have changed a lot since I was a police reporter (Bonnie & Clyde era... I jest) and not always for the better as news access goes. Police log entries are, in a manner of speaking, in code, and sometimes days go by before a detailed report is filed. "
