Attleboro looks to push roof project ahead
Top Headlines Superintendent Pia Durkin said state officials could hold a meeting with school administrators and the mayor within the next four to six weeks in an attempt to move forward with the project, which could cost in the neighborhood of $5 million. The state would provide just over half the funds for the job. Because of the complexities of approving and funding the repair project, however, school business manager Marc Furtado said it may take some time before the roofing project is completed. "My understanding is, it's a process," he said. Durkin also said the recent MSBA approval of the roof project would not preclude the city from submitting a new "statement of interest" promoting a much-larger reconstruction or renovation of the high school. An earlier application was placed on hold by the state. The project would renew about seven acres of roofing over the sprawling school complex. The roof over the school's small gymnasium was recently replaced and will not be included in the project. The city plans to borrow money to pay its share of the project, according to Mayor Kevin Dunas.
