In the New York Collegiate Baseball League, former Bishop Feehan High star Nick Messinger, now at Siena, leads the Elmira Pioneers in hitting with a .306 batting average, having 10 stolen bases and 14 RBI. And in Watertown, former Seekonk High Warrior and current Holy Cross Crusader Ryan George has made 15 relief pitching appearances, having a 2-0 record with a 1.02 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 17-plus innings.

- Former North Attleboro High track great Jerry Espinosa garnered the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles (at 1:05.6) at the New England Masters Meet at Springfield College, the fifth-best time nationally this season, in addition to taking the silver medal in the high jump and bronze with the javelin (145-feet), the ninth-best throw in the nation. "The hurdles was the first time that I competed in that event since the New England Div. I Championship Meet at BC back in 1983 when I competed for UMass-Amherst."

- North Attleboro High product Stephanie McNamara, the fleet-footed sophomore distance runner for the Tufts University cross country and track teams, was selected to the 2008 USTFCCCA Division III Women's All-Academic Track and Field Team. To qualify, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25, McNamara is working as a research intern again this summer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and received a $5,000 grant from the American Heart Association to complete this summer's project

- The Attleboro High girls' basketball team started its summer season at 7-0 and finished at 8-2 with some great play from Kelci Keene, Kiara Gravel, Ali Kelley, Jenna Costa and Savannah Boyle. "They've been playing really strong defense which has resulted in some good transition offense," observed Bombardier coach Mike Riley

- Remember in your prayers, North Attleboro's Ed Patch, who died last week of throat cancer; the owner of two no-hitters as a Rocketeer baseball player; and brother of Brian, Mike and Rick Patch

- New King Philip High boys' hoop coach Sean McInnis has been impressed by the hustle of his Warriors playing summer ball at the Mass. Premier Courts. "We've got some hard-working kids and they've got some goals now," said McInnis, who will have former Bellingham High girls' hoop coach Mike Mason as his jayvee coach and Mark Madden, via Watertown High, as his assistant varsity coach

- Captains-elect for the 2009 Foxboro High girls' lacrosse team will be defender Jenna Kerger, forward Meg Sweeney and midfielder Cindy Viventi

- Mark Zerba captured the Highland Country Club championship, outlasting former Bishop Feehan and UConn standout Justin Ciombor in the 36-hole match play finale. Zerba beat defending champ Wayne Delaney in the semifinals, while in the other "all Shamrock" semifinal, Ciombor bested Mike Michel

- Steve Folan's North Attleboro High hockey team members have been dispersed in leagues in Hingham, Marlboro and Foxboro. The varsity team reached the quarterfinals in the Hingham league with Colin Flynn, Brendan McKenna, Mike Brooks, Cory Wynn, Tom McAuliffe and Justin Crear skating well.

- "He's not the prettiest runner, but he has this will power that can't be matched," related Mansfield High boys' track coach Julie Collins of 800 runner Peter Starke, who also ran the anchor leg for the Hornets' record-setting (8:08) 4x800 relay team.

- "By far, he was our most improved athlete," said Foxboro High boys' track coach Ed Buckley of junior Will Caine, who ran the sprints, threw the javelin and long jumped. "He's quite versatile, but he came out of nowhere."

- One of the gems for "the best team I've ever coached," said Bishop Feehan High girls' track mentor Paul Powell was junior Trenna Schmitt, the anchor for the 4x100 relay team, a near-16-foot long jumper and sprinter.

- Mansfield High softball coach Brian Clemmey is tinkering with the thought of moving superb centerfielder Jacki MacPherson behind the plate next season to fill the vacancy of graduating Liz Moore. MacPherson batted .385 in the leadoff spot of the order too.

- At the breakup dinner for Lindsay Bruno's Foxboro High girls' lacrosse team, sophomore goalie Carrie McLaughlin received the Most Improved player award, while Lauren Butterworth was the Unsung Hero and Brisa Shaw earned the Warrior MVP award.

- Captains-elect for the 2009 edition of Bishop Feehan High baseball will be centerfielder Ryan Lee, shortstop-pitcher Matt Boulter and rightfielder Andrew McCarty. Boulter tied for the Shamrock team lead with 17 runs batted in, while also batting .388 with nine stolen bases.

- Scott Congdon captured the Foxborough CC championship, staging an 8 and 7 win over Joe Santaniello in the 36-hole match play title round. Congdon beat Billy Vine in the semifinals, while Santaniello beat Scott MacLeod in the other pairing.

- Chris Perron's North Attleboro High boys' hoop team is at 6-4 in the Mass. Premier Summer League, getting some nice play out of senior captains Mike Ferguson and Josh Colvin and finally seeing a healthy Madison Brittingham, who had been slowed by a gimpy ankle.

- Captains-elect for Dawn Kafel's Mansfield High girls' lacrosse team in 2009 will be defensive midfielder Brianna Hayes, attacking midfielder Michelle Navoni and attacker Carrie Brophy.

- Did I miss the parade around Foxboro Common for the SuperLiga champion Revolution?
