BRAINTREE - Facing elimination from the Legion Baseball playoffs, Seekonk couldn't hold on to a lead against Braintree, falling to Post 86 Tuesday evening, 14-6.
Seekonk was eliminated from the best-of-three playoffs, 2-1.
Post 311 took a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The first run scored on a fielder's choice, then Dan Charest (3-for-5, two runs) singled to make the score 2-0. With the bases loaded Cody Callahan (3-for-4, two RBI) drew a run-scoring walk, and an error gave Seekonk a 4-0 advantage.
However, Braintree tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the third and Seekonk scored a run in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Seekonk could have had more, but left the bases loaded.
John Simmons (3-for-4, two RBI) hit a home run in the fifth inning to make the score 6-4, but Post 311 couldn't hold the lead.
Braintree scored three runs on four hits and two errors in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 7-6 lead and chasing Seekonk starter Billy Cosmopulos from the game. Cosmopulos lasted six innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) while surrendering 14 hits.
Charest led the seventh inning off with a triple, but was picked off with the hidden ball trick, deflating the Post 311 sideline. Braintree then scored five runs in the bottom of the inning with two outs, taking a commanding 12-6 lead. Post 86 added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth and punched its ticket to the next round of the state playoffs.
Seekonk finished the season at 19-9-2.
