Payne, Spolidoro win Runaways Five Milers

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Out on North Attleboro's High Street, midway through Sunday's Runaways Five Miler, the home field proved crucial for Greg Payne in winning the race in 27:44. Shortly past the three-mile mark, the North Attleboro High School graduate used his familiarity with home terra firma to initiate the decisive moment in the race.

"I finally broke free on Eagle Way off of High Streey," he said. "That's where I made my move. I made a move right before the downhill part, break away, cruise downhill, use the hills to my advantage. I ran this is in high school so I'm familiar with all these streets. I knew where the hills were, where they even out. That's to my advantage and I made use of it."

The race started with six runners in the lead, but that had been reduced to just Payne and Swampscott's Derek Stevens by the third mile. Before the race, Stevens said he was targeting a 27-minute race but he hadn't factored in the course difficulty.

"The rolling hills took a bit out of me, so I wasn't really expecting that," he said. Stevens placed second in 27:56.

The women's race went to Duxbury's Julie Spolidoro who placed fourth overall in 29:08. Her early competition came from North Attleboro's Stephanie McNamara, who placed second in 30:54. "I went out and she was with right me going up that first hill," Spolidoro said. "After the mile, we started picking it up on the downhill. That's when I started feeling good, but the first mile was tough. I'm a rhythm runner. Once I get into a rhythm, I can start to pick people off. I never start off a race really fast. I like to come from behind and work my way up."

Spolidoro opened it up after the first mile and soon lost contact with McNamara.

"At two miles I turned around and I didn't see her any more," she said. "She was wearing a yellow sports bra so it was easy. I was looking for the yellow."

Last year, Payne placed second and in an Olympic year, he reflected on the Olympian who won last year's race and wasn't in North Attleboro on Sunday. "Fortunately Mark Coogan's not here today," he said.
