Vote set on North Attleboro road

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Officials are looking again at reopening Allen Avenue East to motorists, and selectmen have put the issue on the October town meeting warrant.

The board has not taken a position on the matter, but agreed to include the article on the town meeting warrant at the request of Selectman Michael Thompson.

Thompson had previously asked that the issue be studied when selectmen talked about requesting $3,600 to repair the electronic gate that stops motorists from driving down the street.

Allen Avenue East runs from the Fashion Crossing shopping center on Route 1 to Old Post Road.

While the town's fire trucks and police cars have equipment to open the gate, which was installed when Lowe's Home Improvement Store opened, the gate has never worked properly.
The town's traffic study committee, which includes representatives from the police and fire department, unanimously voted against opening the roadway to motorists.

"From a traffic standpoint, Allen Avenue East and Mount Hope Street don't have a good line of vision," Town Administrator Mark Fisher said. "They want to have the road available for emergency services only - in case Route 1 is gridlocked."

It is not the first time the town has considered reopening the road to traffic.

Residents submitted an article to annual town meeting in April 2002 asking that the roadway be reopened. However, representative town meeting members rejected the proposal.

" realist i have to agree with you. when i turn into allen ave from rt. 1 to go to toys r us, people coming up from the lowe's side blow through their stop sign and cut me off ALL THE TIME.

i can just imagine someone pulling out from allen ave east and getting slammed by someone ignoring their stop sign. "

" The electric gate has NEVER worked, and it was there long before Lowe's opened. It's been the source of conflict between NAPD, NAFD and NAED. The police and fire depts don't want the electric co. to have access to this road in case of an emergency.

If I lived on this section of Allen Ave I'd say NO - I remember the huge traffic jams when the Mall opened. "

" Okay, I realize RTM is elected. But can't the selectmen make this decision on their own? "

" Can't we make a decision based on the facts. I'm getting tired of boards sending issues to the RTM or ballot that should be decided by elected officials.

Here's something to think about, on a daily basis there would be no benefit to the people of North Attleborough. The result would be more accidents where the road from Lowes and Walmart intersects with the street. People don't stop there now, why will they stopping when if the road is open? "
