WRENTHAM - Fee! Fie! Foe! Fum! Guess what's growing in Wrentham?
A 14-foot-tall sunflower.
Featuring leaves 1-foot in diameter, the fantastic flora blossomed this summer in the back yard flower and vegetable garden of Ilga and Sam Vitins of 198 Berry St.
"It's huge! It's like 'Jack and the Beanstalk!'" Ilga Vitins said Monday.
Where the magic seed came from is a mystery to the Vitins, whose garden dates back to their moving here in 1974.
"The funny part of it is, it's not our seed," Ilga said.
"It must have come from the bird seed. The birds take the seed from the feeder and hide them."
The giant sunflower started growing in the late spring, coinciding with the Vitins starting their planting.
"I have other sunflowers, but they're small, normal size," Ilga said.
As the one sunflower grew to epic proportions, the Vitins put a stake next it, "thinking that it may blow over, being top heavy."
"I've never, ever, ever seen anything like this," Ilga Vitins said.
