Brady a no-show at gala
FOXBORO - The New England Patriots turned out in full force to raise funds for the team's charitable foundation Tuesday night at Gillette Stadium, with one notable exception.
Quarterback Tom Brady was not there.
Rich Eisen, the NFL Network anchor who served as master of ceremonies for the charity affair in the Fidelity Investments Clubhouse, announced the Patriots' coaches and key front-office personnel, and all of the members of the team in numerical order of their jerseys, but he skipped over No. 12 and never came back to it.
Later, when last year's captains came to the podium to speak, Eisen announced that Brady was in California to deal with "personal issues."
Brady videotaped a message to the gathering before leaving. In it, he said, "I regret I'm not able to be with you guys tonight ... I wish I could be there. But the kickoff gala has been one of my favorite events over the years because the night focuses more on philanthropy than football."
The personal reasons for Brady's absence were not revealed. However, it was speculated that Brady, nursing a bone bruise in his foot and not scheduled to play in Thursday's preseason finale in New Jersey against the New York Giants, was given the time off to be with his infant son by actress Bridget Moynahan, John Edward Thomas Moynahan, who celebrated his first birthday last Friday. Brady's son is being raised in California by his mother.
During the charity auction that followed, a bidder paid $22,000 for Brady to conduct a personal football-throwing clinic for him and nine friends.
