Debate set for council chambers

Limited seating will be available for voters

ATTLEBORO - City voters will not only be able to watch state representative candidates debate on TV, they'll be able to see them in person.

The Sun Chronicle, which is sponsoring a debate between Democrats William Bowles and Kate Jackson, has secured the council chambers at city hall for the forum on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

While seating is limited there, some spectators will be allowed. The other alternative in order to broadcast the debate live was at the studios of AACS, Attleboro's cable company, where no seating is available.

A debate between the two candidates appeared to be off earlier this week. That forum was sponsored by the Democratic City Committee. Jackson said the questioning would have been unfair because many members of the Democratic City Committee are supporters of Bowles. The Sun Chronicle then stepped in and reached an agreement between the two candidates. Under the new plan, The Sun Chronicle will provide panelists. There will also be an opportunity for the candidates to question each other.

As in the original plan, Attleboro resident Peter Gay, executive director of North Attleboro's cable company and host of The Sun Chronicle News Hour with Peter Gay, will serve as moderator of the debate, which begins at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Sept. 16 primary between Bowles, a current city councilor, and Jackson, a former city councilor, will face Republican George Ross, also a city councilor, in the Nov. 4 election to serve as state representative for 11 of Attleboro's 12 precincts. Ross has no primary opponent.

The seat is up for grabs because longtime state Rep. John Lepper, a Republican, is retiring after this session of the state Legislature.
