North Attleboro may extend liquor hours

Tedeschi's says the town is losing Sunday business
NORTH ATTLEBORO - Selectmen will look at extending hours for Sunday liquor sales to 11 p.m. at an upcoming public hearing.

Since 2004, when the state began allowing liquor sales on Sundays, all of the town's liquor stores have been allowed to open for business from noon to 6 p.m. on that day. The hours were set at the recommendation of Police Chief Michael Gould Sr., who said the hours would allow for sufficient sales and would not interfere with morning religious services.

Stores have been allowed to stay open until 11 p.m. during the holiday season from Thanksgiving to New Year's, however.

Now, selectmen have received a letter from Tedeschi's asking that Sunday hours be extended the rest of the year because the town is losing business to other communities. Selectmen Chairman John Rhyno said that a public hearing will be scheduled to discuss the matter at an upcoming meeting.

He has asked the town to investigate what Sunday hours are set in other communities and has asked for an opinion from the police chief.

" How much does the town make off of this? Do we really need people coming to town at 10:45 racing to beat the 11:00 cut-off time? "

" this just boils down to the ole saying, "give them an inch and they will take a mile". what is wrong with the hours of 12:00-6:00p.m.? those hours have been in place for a long time now, and it doesn't seem to bother most people! most of us ole timers, had to live by the blue laws. i remember when there were no supermarkets, restaurants, liquor stores, and tractor trailers weren't allowed(unless they had food, that would spoil). the only places open were icecream stands, and gas stations. so, live with the hours alloted! " I'm with Phil - NA has the best record for stopping drunk drivers, and someone is worrying that others can't buy booze at 10pm on a Sunday???

To obear - Since the revocation of the blue laws the only people who don't get the day off are the workers - especially retail workers. There's not more money to be spent, it just gets spread over seven days instead of six. Our moms and dads did errands on Saturdays ad relaxed on Sundays , no matter what their religious affiliation. We need more REAL days off.

It seems that only mailmen, government workers and trash haulers get those days off, and trash haulers get overtime for the 'make up' Saturday pick up. whoopie. "

" The store is open until 11 pm so what is the differance if they sell beer? The employee is going to be there either way. Those old blue laws are just another way that the State micro-manages our lives. Liquor sales should be the same for every day not everone cares that some people may go to religous services on Sunday. "

" The rest of the neighboring communities also close between 5 & 6 pm. Tedeschi's is trying a scare tactic that usually works. When someone wants beer they'll find time to buy it before closing time. Beer drinkers will never forget shopping hours.
Also, How about the impact on the hourly employees. No one ever asks them if they enjoy working until 11pm. People will say they shouldn't be in retail if they don't like the hours. Many employees can't just quit when the employer screws you. Sometimes when you start in retail you're in for good. Job choices are limited. "

" Just what we need liquor stores open till 11 pm.

Don't we have enough drunks on the road now they want to open the access to liquor till 11 pm on the lords day. "
