What's the word?
By Tiffany Stanley For The Sun Chronicle
Little consensus exists within any Christian group on the topic of homosexuality. Though many churches have official positions on the subject, far more nuanced opinions and beliefs can be found within most denominations.
Central to the controversy is how churches interpret the Bible.
Those who lean toward a more literal interpretation of the Bible often see homosexuality as incompatible with Christian teachings. They point to Bible verses which reference and condemn same-sex behavior and Biblical depictions of marriage as between men and women.
Those who have a more liberal interpretation of Scripture point out that the Bible does not reference homosexual relationships as we know them today.
They often remind people that the central message of Christianity is not about homosexuality, but about love. They point out Jesus never mentioned homosexuality and the parts of the Bible that do are few and far between.
Pew Forum lists official positions within major church bodies and other religious groups on homosexuality.
