Wrentham gets ready to bid summer farewell

WRENTHAM - The town's end-of-summer celebration is on for Saturday around the town common.

The 27th Annual Wrentham Day - the town's biggest annual event - runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a rain date the following Saturday.

The accompanying Wrentham Wroad Wrace, also sponsored by Wrentham Recreation, will kick off at 10 a.m.

Again this year, it will be a Wrentham Weekend, with the Seventh Annual Keep Wrentham Beautiful Day being held Sunday. The cleanup will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with residents asked to meet at the town center parking lot where trash that is collected should be brought.

Wrentham Day again will feature more than 50 tables and booths with all kinds of information and items for sale. Some of the items are arts and crafts. There will be games, food, music, the Wrentham Lions Club's 100-foot banana split at 2 p.m., and the third year of "cow chip bingo," where Animal Control Officer Sue Thibedeau's cow drops its load in spots residents try to predict mid-day.

New for this year are mimes, funded by the Wrentham Cultural Council.

"Everyone in town comes out. They always make their way down to check out what is going on," Recreation Director Jeff Plympton said of the event falling after the first week of school and Labor Day weekend. "It is a great day for Wrentham."

"Ken Barney" is playing popular music acoustically, and Selectman Bob Cohen's blues band, MojoFools, will also be on hand.

Firefighters will sell their clam chowder, as usual, and Wrentham Youth Baseball and Softball will sell other food.

Police again this year will sponsor the Drug Abuse Resistance Education child identification program where children are fingerprinted.

The 24th annual 5K road race sanctioned by USA Track & Field kicks off at 10 a.m., starting and finishing at the town common. More than 100 sign up each year for the 3.1-mile road race.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the town common. All participants get T-shirts and there are prizes. The entry fee is $20 the day of the race but $18 by mail and $16 online at www.needtorace.com before.

Race and booth applications are available at town hall and the town's Web site, www.wrentham.ma.us. Call the recreation office at 508-384-5427 or e-mail jplympton@wrentham.ma.us for more information.

For the third year in a row, a second race is being held. The 20K "Wrentham Forest Challenge" trail race is through the hilly and rocky woods off Sweatt Fields and Wrentham State Forest and conservation land. That race, which typically attracts a couple of dozen participants, begins about 9 a.m., with registration priced at $15 seven days before the race and $20 after. Registration and other information can be found at www.wrenthamforest.com. The race is coordinated by resident Peter Dubendris.

Both races have age categories and there will be food, including pizza, and beverages for runners provided by Eagle Brook Saloon in Norfolk and Town Pizza downtown.

Dozens of volunteers help out for Wrentham Day, including King Philip's cross country team, which assists with the main road race.
