Reverse 911 gets dry run in NA

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Phones will be ringing throughout town next Sunday when the town conducts a test of its emergency reverse-911 telephone system.
The test of the Connect-CTY telephone system, which allows the town to call all households in the event of an emergency, will be conducted at 7 p.m.
When residents pick up the phone, they will hear a recorded message indicating the telephone system is being tested. "We wanted to determine whether the numbers we have are accurate," said Joann Cathcart, assistant to the town administrator.
Residents who receive a call do not have to do anything after the test is conducted.
Residents who do not receive a call, but would like to be included on the list, will have to contact town hall to have their number added to the database.
In addition, residents who would like to add a different number, such as a cell phone number, can contact town hall at 508-699-0100 during the week.
The reverse-911 system is only activated in the case of emergency or unexpected situations.
It has been used in the past to inform residents of a neighborhood about an unexpected street closure and to inform residents of a delay in trash pickup because of a snowstorm.
The fire chief, police chief and town administrator must confer before using the system, and at least two of the three have to approve its use, Cathcart said. |
