NORTH ATTLEBORO - Work to beautify Barrows Park by changing the landscaping and adding an irrigation system is now under way.
Selectman Paul Belham and Park and Recreation Director Steve Carvalho are heading up the project, in conjunction with the veterans department and local veterans' organizations.
Improvements will include adding lighting to war monuments in the park, at the intersection of Barrows and South Washington streets, and regrading the site to eliminate the property's slope.
After the work is completed, the property will be planted with new grass.
"It will take about three weeks to finish the work," Belham said.
The entire project is expected to cost about $10,000. The $5,000 cost of the irrigation system has already been supplied by a donor who has asked to remain anonymous.
The cost does not include the donations of materials and equipment provided by Foxboro Electric, Boro Sand and Gravel, Dale Nelson, General Maintenance, Hart Electric, Stay Green and Briggs Nursery.
Belham said about $2,050 of the remaining $5,000 has been raised so far.
Anyone interested in making a donation toward the project can send a check made out to the Town of North Attleboro with "Barrows Park" on the memo line to Paul Belham, 21 Metters St., North Attleboro, MA 02760.
