Man accused of filing false tax returns

WRENTHAM - A local man has been charged in federal court in Boston for allegedly filing false tax returns by failing to report rental income on property he and his wife owned.

Steven P. Kenney, 59, of 375 Bennett St. in Wrentham, was charged in an indictment last week with four counts of filing false tax returns, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston announced Tuesday.

The indictment alleges that from 1998-2005, Kenney prepared federal joint tax returns filed by himself and his spouse in which he claimed deductions for rental property they owned, but failed to report the rental income, as well as more than $260,000 in gains when they sold the property in 2005.

If convicted on the charges, Kenney faces up to three years imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release and a $250,000 fine on each count.
