Zone change eyed on Water, West streets

ATTLEBORO - Property owners on Water and West streets have asked the city to rezone their industrial land to general business.

The parcels encompass about 15 acres on both sides of Water near the intersection of West.

According to papers on file in the planning department, none of the owners are contemplating a change in use, but two of the three hope to sell to a commercial entity "at some future time."

The properties are at 64 and 74 Water and 88 West.

Amotek Inc. owns 64 Water, an industrial building with rental space. Both 74 Water and 88 West are homes and are owned by Eileen Borden and Lynn Sicola, respectively.

According to the application, Amotek can't attract industrial users for its rental spaces.

The area targeted for a general business designation is located near industrial, commercial and residential properties.

National Grid and NeedleTech are located on West Street near the intersection of Water. A new condominium complex is just around the corner on West at the site of the former Pride Auto and there's a pizza shop on the corner of West and North Avenue across the street from the condos.

The area proposed for general business is on the opposite side of a large block where there's a controversial proposal to rezone some North Main Street parcels from residential to general business.

The Water street proposal is about 2,000 feet west of the North Main proposal.

A public hearing before the city council and planning board has been scheduled for Oct. 7 at city hall.
