Handicapped Attleboro child's wheelchair stolen

MIKE GEORGECrime victims Ranessa Nesbitt and her daughter Aaliyah, 4, whose wheelchair was stolen. Aaliyah as an illness that makes it difficult for her to sit up. Police think the chair was stolen for the metal.

Police, neighbors call crime disturbing
ATTLEBORO - Someone stole a wheelchair belonging to a 4-year-old handicapped child outside her home on Merritt Place, in what residents and police are calling one of the more disturbing crimes to occur recently in the city.

Ranessa Nesbitt says her daughter Aaliyah's wheelchair was stolen from outside her apartment at 3 Merritt Place sometime between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday.

"I have no idea who would do something like that, especially if they knew it belonged to a handicapped child. It's never happened on this street before, and all of a sudden it happens," said Nesbitt, who moved to the apartment in July with her boyfriend Angel Osorio.

The couple also has a 5-month-old daughter, Deziray.

"I couldn't believe it, myself," Osorio said. "I'm kind of shocked. I was furious at first. It was my daughter's wheelchair. I just want it to be returned."
Aaliyah was born with a disability similar to cerebral palsy, and can't walk, talk or sit up on her own. She needs care around the clock, Nesbitt said.

The wheelchair helps Aaliyah to sit up and the couple is now waiting to get another one on loan from Boston Children's Hospital until insurance will approve a new one.

Police believe the wheelchair, valued at $2,000, was stolen because it is made of titanium, a valuable metal.

"It's gut wrenching to think that someone would steal a disabled child's wheelchair, possibly for their next high," said Attleboro Detective Sgt. Arthur Brillon, who is investigating the crime.

The wheelchair is about the size of a baby stroller, has a blue tubular frame with blue arm rests, a blue seat and a polka dot back pad. The brand name of the wheelchair is National Seating and Mobility.

Merritt Place is off North Main Street, near St. John the Evangelist Church. The area is heavily populated and police suspect there might have been witnesses to the theft.

The police department is offering a $250 reward for information leading to the recovery of the wheelchair, or information leading to the identity of the thief.

"Hopefully they'll find the person who took it, and they will have the chair, and it's not tampered with or anything," Nesbitt said.

The crime has angered the couple's neighbors.

"It's a scumbag that stole from a handicapped child," said neighbor Michael Johnson. "They didn't steal it from the parents. They stole from a handicapped child."
If anyone has any information on the crime, they are urged to call detectives at 508-222-1259.

" Hey "angeld10770" - Evil things happen to evil people... Have you ever considered that this is payback for all of the evil that the parents have caused over the years... I know I have read about them in this paper before, and it hasn't been for doing God's work. "

" Hey KK, I think you left the 3rd K out of your name so that all your posts don't get deleted. What an idiot you are. People like you don't deserve to be able to voice their opinions. "

" wow, calm down you carzy people. how is this a shock to anyone? people steal other peoples stuff all of the time. BUT....the parents probably sold the wheelchair to buy drugs and are now making up the story so someone will feel bad and buy them a new one. "

" As far as calling her a bad mother may you rot in hell. I have seen this couple and thier children on the gatra bus all the time. She is a very lovin and attentive mother that has been given a very hard hand to deal with this little angel! Hope everything works out. "

" I think it is clearly disgusting that anyone could steal anything from a child, especially a wheelchair from a disabled child. The paents are distraught as is over this, than you have these idiots commenting blaming the parents. There could be 100 different reasons it was left outside. As far as i see it's noones buisness nor fault except for the LOSER(S) who stole it.Hopefully it will get returned and if not does it really matter who pays for a new one,it definently is NOT the disabled little girls fault.I'm sure she is very uncomfortable without it. "

" To Outfall
Have you ever tried to carry a 60-80 lbs dead weight and a wheelchair? Ever think maybe she couldn't handle both her daughter and the chair at the same time? I ama firm believer in evil things happen to evil people so the person(s) who did this will get thiers. "

" This is crazy you are so quick to judge this mother! You don't walk in her shoes and reguardless if welfare does help that little girl get a new chair,This is when I dont mind if my taxes go towards welfare, besides you might want to check your facts it could be SSI that takes care of her not WELFARE! Dont be so quick to judge it could be you some day that needs help... And I would'nt say she is lazy, Maybe tired or maybe just forgot.....We are all human except for the scum who took it..I hope everything works out for that family and she gets a new chair. "

" i have read all of the posts here, and i asked myself all of the questions, that were stated in the posts. i am sure that the det. dept. of the attleboro police dept., has alerted all scrap yards in the local area, to be on the look out for this kind of metal. i have stated before, that there are individuals out there, just looking, to see what they can grab, for a quick buck, no matter, what it is. in this case, it was a specilal needs child's wheelchair. i am sure that the good lord, will take care of the individual or individuals involved! " THIS IS VERY SAD BUT UNFORTUNATELY MERRIT PLACE IS FULL OF CRACKHEADS AND HAS BEEN FOR YEARS AND SOMEONE PROBABLY STOLE THE WHEELCHAIR TO BUY THEIR CRACK. THAT STREET NEEDS TO BE CLEANED UP AND THEN MAYBE THAT POOR MOTHER AND CHILD WILL BE ABLE TO PARK THE WHEELCHAIR OUTSIDE. PLEASE DON'T CALL THE PARENTS DUMB--THEY ARE JUST UNFORTUNATE HAVING TO LIVE ON THAT LOUSY STREET. "

" You (editor) deleted my post. Now I'll get nasty.
Welfare pays for this chair Super Mom could care less if the baby has or doesn't have a wheelchair...because the state will buy another one. They don't have to take care of their equipment plain and simple. Or maybe some moonbat will get a collection going for the "victims" pennies from heaven as far as the parent is concerned. The Attleboro Police must get a chuckle over this kind of behavior, although they can't show it in public. I bet when they start comparing notes on the pathetic looser of the day they all chuckle. "

" " how uncaring can you be ?? Did it occur to " outfall" that perhaps the child's home is not able to accommodate the wheelchair or that they were " airing it out " while the child slept ? As a nurse who cares for handicapped children , I cannot understand why someone would steal the child's only transporation .Perhaps , the child's house has multiple apts. in it and the hallway needs to be clear in the event of EMS personnel needing to come to attend to any of the house's occupants . I am sure that if it were winter that they'd have to make room inside for the wheelchair !! "

outfall1945 wrote on Sep 6, 2008 6:14 AM:

" very sad. But why did these people leave the wheelchair outside. If it was so valuable why did they not bring it inside. Oh my too lazy. No sympathy for the dumb parents, just for the chid. It is a lousy rotten world and if you do not take care of your belongings no one else will. I can not beleive how concerned we are about people being so stupid and leaving invitations for crooks "
