Hanna brings 4.31 inches of rain to city

Tom MaguireDowntown work continues in the rain Bay State Gas crews set up a canopy over where they were working in downtown Attleboro, when the rains arrived on Tuesday afternoon, ushering in a cold front. Temperatures in the mid-40s are expected by Thursday morning as the area experiences a bit of fall. Highs of 68 today and 70 on Thursday also are expected, according to AccuWeather. ATTLEBORO - Because of a misreading of rainfall totals at the Attleboro Water Department Saturday morning, Tropical Storm Hanna actually brought more than an inch of additional rain than first reported.

Saturday morning's reading of the previous 24 hours should have been 2.09 inches, not 0.96 inch. The correct sum, added to Sunday morning's reading of 2.22 inches, meant that the two-day storm brought 4.31 inches of rain.

How does that stack up against other two-day storm rainfall totals?

It doesn't even make the Top 10 in the 69 years the water department has been compiling weather data. The record is 8.75 inches on Sept. 13 and 14, 1944. In October 2005, there were consecutive days with more than 7 inches of rain recorded.

The 2.22 inches registered Sunday morning also doesn't make the Top 10 for September daily rainfall on the books. The record is 5 inches on Sept. 4, 1944.
However, the two days of rain - the month's first - does ensure this September will exceed the 50-year average rainfall for the month. That average is just under 4 inches.

Last September, only 2.16 inches fell.
