Norton workers agree to pay 25 percent of health insurance

NORTON - Newly hired school clerks and cafeteria workers will pay 25 percent of their health insurance premium under new three-year union contracts.

Current clerical and cafeteria staff will pay that 25 percent in the contracts' final year, school committee Chairman Thomas Golota said. Their share of the premiums will increase 5 percent annually to reach that level.

New hires also cannot buy back sick leave time, Golota said.

All clerks and cafeteria workers will get a 2 percent raise annually.

The school custodial union contract ratified in the spring has the same terms, Golota said. The school committee ratified the clerks and cafeteria contracts Monday night.

" Doesn't everyone on the payroll in Norton pay 25% of their health insurance? I thought the days of free health insurance were gone. In the corporate world everyone pays a percentage; it's the only way for a company to survive, especially since employer health insurance premiums increased by a substantial margin almost 2 times the rate of inflation last year. I work in the private sector and I expect to pay for a portion of my benefits because honestly in this day and age I am just grateful to have a job and benefits. "
