NORTON - School enrollment is down 135 students, Superintendent Patricia Ansay says.
Classes opened last week with 2,912 students among pre-kindergarten through grade 12, Ansay told the school committee this week.
The school district had 3,047 students when classes ended in June.
The current enrollment of 2,912 students includes 194 students at the Foxborough Regional Charter School in Foxboro, an increase of 20, Ansay said.
There are 41 out-of-district placements, and five home-schooled students.
The Norton school enrollments when classes began last week were: J.C. Solmonese Elementary, 588 students; Henri A. Yelle Elementary, 484; L.G. Nourse Elementary, 368; Norton Middle, 742; and Norton High, 730.
The Solmonese school is down 43 students from June.
Ansay said she has requested birth rate data from town hall to better understand this figure.
The Nourse school has 24 more second graders than last year, Ansay said.
Norton High, meanwhile, is up 23 students.
Grades nine and 11 are significantly larger than last year, Ansay said.
However, the senior class is 30 students smaller than the class of 2008.
