VOLLEYBALL: For starters, Shamrocks look strong

KINGSTON - The Bishop Feehan High School girls' volleyball team, always one of the premier teams in the Commonwealth, hardly worked up a sweat at Sacred Heart Monday, scoring a decisive 3-0 victory.

The Shamrocks posted 25-6, 15-7, 15-15 victories in the season-opening non-league match. "We really clicked, it was a great team match," related Bishop Feehan boss Joe Reardon.

Supported by the outstanding play of Liz Gingras (11 assists) and Steph Whooten (eight assists), the Shamrocks were outstanding in creating an attack. In the first game, Jacki Atkinson accounted for seven straight service points, then both Gingras and Carrie Kaczowka each had six consecutive service points. The Shamrocks mis-fired on just four serves against a traditionally strong foe.

Amy Lepley (eight kills, two blocks), Morgan Lindberg (six kills) and Atkinson (six kills, five assists) also figured significantly in the Shamrocks' success.

The Shamrocks play the second of six straight matches on the road to begin the season Wednesday at Durfee.

North Attleboro 3, Mansfield 1

MANSFIELD - The Rocketeers had to reach down hard to beat the Hornets. But, Rachel Gould (16 digs) and Lorraine Weymouth (18 assists) came up with some very clever floor play to lead North to victory in the Hockomock League match - 25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 25-20.

In the fourth game, North overcame a three-point deficit as Gould notched four straight service points for an 18-17 margin. Kelsey Weymouth closed out the match by winning three straight service points.

North won the third game in a real tussle. Tori Morris scored six straight service points to put North on top 17-10. Ashley Kepaa (nine blocks, four kills) also played a strong net game for the Rocketeers.

For Mansfield, senior Devan MacKinnon did a nice job setting and freshman Tori Shannon had a nice varsity debut.

North (2-0) hosts Oliver Ames Wednesday, while the Hornets (0-1) visit Canton.

Durfee 3, Attleboro 2

ATTLEBORO - The Blue Bombardiers let victory No. 2 get away after winning the first two games only to see Durfee come storming back to win the next three, and eventually the match. Attleboro won the first two games 25-14 and 25-10, but Durfee answered to win the match with wins of 25-11, 25-21 and 15-12.

"We just got lulled into thinking it was going to be a win, and that can happen any time you win the first two that easy. We ended up losing the third game and (Durfee) woke up and carried the momentum into the next two games," said AHS coach Brian Warburton, whose team is 1-2 and home against Barnstable Wednesday. "It was definitely disappointing."

Durfee had to shrug off a 5-0 Attleboro lead in the decisive fifth game as well.

Canton 3, King Philip 0

WRENTHAM - It was a rough start to the season for the Warriors who lost in three straight (25-22, 25-17, 25-11) to the visiting Bulldogs.

For KP, junior Cara Daly had a good all-around game with 15 attacks and 10 kills, senior Caitlin Stetter had three kills and junior Megan Cronin did a nice job serving and setting.

The Warriors are at Sharon on Wednesday.

Foxboro 3, Hopedale 0

HOPEDALE - The Warriors cruised in their season debut, scoring 25-8, 25-12 and 25-17 victories to sweep the non-leaguer over the Blue Raiders.

Jenna Weiskerger accounted for nine straight service points in the opening game to give Foxboro an 11-2 lead. In the second game, Brittany Stopa had four kills and four service points to put Foxboro ahead. Stopa had eight kills overall, while senior captain Michelle Cameron accounted for 12 assists.

The Warriors begin Hockomock League action Wednesday, home against Franklin.

Dighton-Rehoboth 3, Seekonk 0

SEEKONK - In a matchup of South Coast Conference rivals, D-R won its first of the season by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-15.

Saddie Gosselin and Meg Roy both played well for the Falcons, who evened up at 1-1. For the Warriors, Samantha Howarth finished with six digs while Katie Halpin had five blocks and setter Madison Burke 15 assists.

Both teams return to action Wednesday, D-R at Coyle-Cassidy and Seekonk (0-1) at Case.
