Wrentham holds hazardous waste collection Saturday
Top Headlines The event runs from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. at the department of public works yard at 360 Taunton St. and behind the senior center. Residents have to show identification, and the DPW reserves the right to limit quantities of waste accepted. The collection is usually held in May, but town officials decided to hold the event toward fall this time around as the turnout wasn't as good last year as previous years. Only household wastes will be accepted, including oil based paints (no latex paint), stains and varnishes, paint thinners/strippers, turpentine and cleaning solvents; pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides; poisons, banned chemicals and photographic chemicals; kerosene and other waste fuels; hobby/art supplies, glues, adhesives, rubber cement, and resins; asbestos (double bagged and wetted); swimming pool chemicals; oven, toilet bowl and drain cleaners; antifreeze, brake fluid and transmission fluid; auto batteries and rechargeable batteries; chemistry sets; and propane, helium and oxygen tanks with collection fees ranging from $2 to $10. For a more complete list, visit www.wrentham.ma.us and click on the recycling link or call the DPW at 508-384-5477. Residents can dispose of used motor oil and products containing mercury at waste collection day or dropped off at the DPW yard off Taunton Street the first Saturday of each month from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The following have mercury in them and shouldn't be put out in the trash: fluorescent bulbs, thermometers, thermostats, and button batteries. Dispose of your mercury thermometer or thermostat at the collection day and get a free digital replacement. Tires are accepted at collection day but there is a collection fee, and they are also accepted on a Wednesday scheduled curbside pickup by calling 1-800-248-8898. Fees for car tires Saturday are $3. Televisions, computers and electronics are only accepted during such curbside pickups. Latex paints and other water-based paints are not considered hazardous, and residents are encouraged to give them away if the paints are usable, or to dry it up and throw it in the trash if it is unusable. Other items not accepted at the collection day: explosives, fireworks, ammunition, biological or medical waste, dioxins, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, radioactive or reactive materials, and commercial or industrial waste. Volunteers are needed to help with the collection, and can volunteer for an hour or more. Call the DPW at 508-384-5477.
