REHOBOTH - The Falcons of Dighton-Rehoboth have to consider themselves to be one of the best field hockey teams in the South Coast Conference this season after posting a 2-1 verdict over Apponequet High.
"Though they graduated a lot of their defense, they're still a strong team, this was a good test for us," said D-R coach Roberta Cordeiro, whose Falcons scored the first two goals of the match.
The Lakers tallied a late first-half goal off of a penalty corner, just 23 seconds after D-R's Alexa Cowell scored what proved to be the match-winning goal at 20:44.
Through a physically exhausting and high-paced second half, neither team was able to score. Both teams finished with six shots, D-R goalie Brittney Noons (six saves) and defender Abby Woodard playing especially well defensively as the Lakers totaled nine penalty corners.
"We earned it," added Cordeiro, whose Falcons are 2-0, heading into a home match Friday against Wareham.
D-R took the lead when Kayla Cartin scored off of a Haley Jackson feed just 3:12 into the contest. The Falcons increased the advantage to a pair of goals off of a penalty corner taken by Chelsea Brown. Jenna Roche took control of the ball and fed Cowell for the match-winner with just under 10 minutes left until halftime.
Haley Jackson set up Cartin's goal and played a strong transitional game for the Falcons. "It was a very hard-fought contest," added Cordeiro. "The important thing was that we scored off of a corner, which is what we want to focus on because we weren't so good at it last year."
Mansfield 1, Oliver Ames 0
EASTON - The blast shook the backboard and it was enough to beat the Tigers. Haley Wolfe uncorked a 10-yard blast midway through the second half, with 13:45 remaining, for the lone goal of the Hockomock League match.
The Hornets created some very good forward motion through the first half, but could not finish in the final third of the field. "We didn't get many shots off," said Mansfield coach Theresa DeGirolamo. "We let them carry the ball too far."
Hornet goalie Adrienne Breef-Pilz came up with seven saves, including a dazzling first-half stop to preserve the shutout at the time. In addition, midfielder Maria McCabe and right wing Cassie Olson were stalwards in their transitional work. MHS (2-1) entertains Stoughton Friday.
Franklin 2, North Attleboro 1
NORTH ATTLEBORO - The Rocketeers generated enough offense through 50 minutes of the Hockomock League match, but were held scoreless by Panther goalies Susie Jacob and Kelyn Burke. In the meantime, the Panthers scored their go-ahead goal with just under five minutes left until halftime, Kim Takahata scoring the first goal and then Franklin netted the match-winner with 12:03 left, Kathleen Hart scoring.
Meg Morra netted the North goal, converting a pass from Alex VanBuren, with 5:42 remaining. "We played a good first half, but couldn't score," said North coach Christine Goyette. "We played much better, we were more aggressive going to the ball."
North generated six shots and totaled six penalty corners, four during the first half. North goalie Autumn Ivory totaled 13 saves, while midfielder Hannah Barth also played exceptionally strong. The Rocketeers (0-3) visit King Philip Friday.
King Philip 2, Stoughton 1
STOUGHTON - The Warriors scored the first two goals of the Hockomock League match, then held off the Black Knights to prevail. KP goalie Lauren Nickerson (eight saves) and midfielder Ali Lomp came up big in the KP half of the field over the final 20 minutes in preventing Stoughton of a match-tying goal.
Meg Read put unbeaten (2-0-1) KP into the lead in the 20th minute of the first half, Kerry Eaton assisting. Then barely a minute into the second half, Krissy Cannon created a two-goal margin for the Warriors with Caroline Ouimette assisting.
Stoughton came back to net its goal in the 41st minute of action. "We were in control until then," said KP coach Liz Hathaway, "but we held firm."
KP entertains North Attleboro Friday.
