FOXBORO - The newly opened Living Waters Christian Academy in the First Baptist Church at Mechanic and Chestnut streets has asked the town to install school signs and crosswalks.
Selectmen have invited the head of the school, Katrina A. Joseph, to discuss her request at 7:45 tonight.
Police Chief Edward O'Leary wrote that the roads are heavily traveled and a school zone is "appropriate for this location."
Designs details and responsibility for costs are among the unsettled issues. Establishing a school zone at the four-way intersection would require 16 signs costing $3,100, not including labor, Highway Superintendent Robert Swanson said.
Swanson noted there already are crosswalks at the intersection, and that the traffic signal includes pedestrian crossing lights.
"Students that walk to the academy should be required to use the existing crosswalks and signal for maximum safety," Swanson wrote to Town Manager Andrew Gala.
Swanson wrote that selectmen could vote to reduce the speed limit to 20 mph, the school zone speed.
Before acting on the academy's request, selectmen said they'd like more information, including how many walkers there are.
The academy, which also has a location in Norwood, opened in the church building at 115 Mechanic St. on Sept. 2 and currently has 70 students, according to Joseph.
