Local abortion protests start

ATTLEBORO - Anti-abortion activists held signs and prayed outside a clinic Wednesday, and said they intend to return every day until Nov. 2 as part of a "40 Days for Life" campaign.

Holding signs outside of the Four Women clinic on Emory Street stating, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you - God," the protesters said they are part of a national effort to urge women not to abort their babies.

Some of the signs had photographs of a 10-week-old fetus.

Stephen Marcotte, an organizer of the effort, said the hope is women entering the clinic will see the signs and think twice.

"We want to show the women going in the life they have within them," he said.
He said the effort is a peaceful one that involves praying for the women, and offering help if they want it.

His mother, Rachelle Marcotte of Norton, said she joined the effort because she felt she had to act on her belief that abortion is wrong.

"I personally have to get out here and be visible to firm up my inner convictions," she said.

Another woman holding a sign outside the clinic said she is confident that abortion will one day become illegal, but "only God knows when."

Stephen Marcotte said Wednesday was the first of 40 days of the campaign. He said he is planning to have people outside the clinic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

On Wednesday afternoon, there were five people outside the clinic. A white line painted on the street marks a buffer zone that protesters must stay outside of by law.

Marcotte said some of the activists are coming from as far as Cape Cod to help out.

The group said 170 communities in the United States and Canada are holding the demonstrations.

" First I give kudos to the Sun Chroncile for writing and printing pictures of the 40 Days for Life campaign. Here in Rhode Island NO papers will cover the story.

As Hojo20 statemnet about get a life at least we all have a life, if it wasn't for the protesters some babies may be given a life.

mmarcia says they blocked her car it was not 40 Days for Life campaigns. 40DFL sign peace statements saying they will not block or stop anyone from entering or leaving.

As for the picture of the baby in the womb, there are far worst pictures that could be shown from what's happening in those building across America. America was to realize just because the goverment says it's alright to have an abortion, doesn't mean it's morally right. No matter how you look at it's murder. An we as people have to stop the killing. "

" The problem I have with these folks isn't their right to protest, or even their position on the subject, but the display of the images. I have 2 small boys and dread the day they ask me what those pictures are.

These protesters care so much about the kids, that they display these images less than a few 100 yards from a playground. The sad thing is that there is nothing that can be done about the images as they are not sexual in nature. I can't take my kids to a Rated R movie, but these inconsiderate people have no qualms about showing images like that to young children. "

" mmarcia - my take is that they violated their right to protest in your case and I agree they should not impede someone's access to any building.

Hojo - I think believing in a cause and voicing that stance, private or in public, is quite different than your analogy. And your likening the protest of a medical procedure, abortion, to protesting the pulling of weeds is nonsensical. So everything you do outside of spending time with your family is of the utmost importance otherwise it would never take you from that precious time with them?

Come on now, you are obviously against their pro-life stance and you're making crazy excuses and statements to belittle a group's freedom in expressing their disagreement with your own stance. Why not agree to disagree instead of passing judgement on someone else's priorities in life and assuming your view and priorities are superior?

What thing have you done in your life that you are most embarrased by? None of my business, right? Why should I judge you on something so personal? Not very nice being judged is it - so perhaps you shouldn't judge them for not "having a life" eh? "

Hojo20 wrote on Sep 25, 2008 12:36 PM:

" Yeah but I do my things and stay out of other people's business.

The equivalent would be me (not spending free time with my family) standing in front of your house protesting because you pulled some weeds. You killed them. it's the same thing. "

mmarcia wrote on Sep 25, 2008 12:35 PM:

" They might have the right to protest whatever they think is going on inside the building but they DON'T have the right to block people from getting medical care.

A few years ago I had to see a doctor in that building - not a doc that they were protesting - and they stepped in front of my car as I entered the parking lot to block me. I was made late for my appointment while they yelled at me and showed me their ugly signs. Who has rights here? "

ricknkim wrote on Sep 25, 2008 11:01 AM:

" This is part of their life Hojo - in their eyes it is an attempt to save human life. You can disagree with their message or tactics but not sure your "get a life" advice is constructive or warranted. I'm sure you do things and have interests that others neither agree with nor participate in - does that mean you have no life? "
