Other senior citizens have been targeted by cold calls

ATTLEBORO - A phoney contractor who tried to scam a South Attleboro senior citizen this month and made what could have been lethal alterations in the chimney of her home is apparently not the only one targeting elders in the area.

A senior from Wrentham, who asked that her name not be used, told The Sun Chronicle Tuesday that she got a telemarketing call last week from someone who claimed to represent a company called Hamilton Tech, which supposedly cleans chimneys.

Like the South Attleboro woman, the Wrentham resident said the caller pushed hard to sell the service.

However, the woman told the caller she was busy and asked for a call-back number that turned out to be fake. In addition, a second number that appeared on the Wrentham resident's caller ID unit was also a phoney.

The 800 number which the telemarketer gave the Wrentham woman was found by The Sun Chronicle to be a number used by two legitimate radio stations in New York City, WQHT and WRKS. A recorded message for WQHT, a popular hip-hop station commonly known as HOT 97, indicated the number is used by listeners to request songs.

Meanwhile, a recording that answered the number that came up on the Wrentham resident's caller ID was apparently put there by the telephone company and characterized the number as a fraud.

According to information found on the Internet, the number is a Verizon land line in Boston.

The recorded message said "telemarketing fraud alert. The number on your caller ID is false. If you continue to receive these calls, please call your local telephone company and file a complaint."

The South Attleboro woman became suspicious of the work done by a company called Up and Smoke Chimney, and stopped payment on the $1,880 check she wrote for the job. She later took the matter to the city's inspection department, which said the job created a hazardous and potentially lethal condition and that the work was never needed.

A volunteer contractor repaired the damage Tuesday.
