March of Dimes brings annual walk to city park

ATTLEBORO

If you're looking for something new to do and would like to do a good deed at the same time, Capron Park is the place to be this Saturday.

For the first time at the park, the March of Dimes will hold a fundraising walk in conjunction with its annual March of Dimes March for Babies.

The goal of the March for Babies is to raise awareness about the mission of the March of Dimes, which is to improve the health of all babies by preventing birth defects, infant mortality and premature birth.

The event has been supported for several years by the residents of Bristol County, but the Massachusetts Chapter of the March of Dimes has designated the Capron Park Zoo, the new home of Ramses, a rare, white, male lion, as the new site for the March for Babies. "The Massachusetts Chapter of the March of Dimes feels that the family-friendly atmosphere of Capron Park Zoo is perfect for all the families and corporations that participate in the March of Babies event," said March of Dimes Senior Community Director Malisa Iannino.

The March of Dimes expects more than 200 people from various Bristol County communities to turn out for the event and raise more than $60,000 to help ensure every baby has a healthy start in life.

Anyone interested in participating in the event can either register online via www.marchforbabies.org, a site through which individuals also can raise money for the event, or register to walk in the event at Capron Park the day of the event between 9:30 a.m. and the start of the walk, which is 10:30 a.m.

Designed as a family-oriented, safe walk, the route is about 1 1/2 miles and will take place entirely within the park, with participants walking around the park twice. To add to the family atmosphere, walk participants will be provided with lunch by Panera Bread of North Attleboro and have free admission to Capron Park Zoo, along with a special opportunity to meet the Boston Red Sox mascot, Wally the Green Monster.
