Wrentham CVS would include long-sought traffic signal

WRENTHAM - A long-sought traffic signal at the busy intersection of Randall Road and South Street is proposed as part of the plans for a CVS near downtown.

CVS would pay for the signal, which MassHighway has to approve, but reportedly would allow.

Town officials for several years have been trying to get the state to install a signal at the intersection.

An overflow crowd of about 75 people turned out last week for a public hearing on the drugstore plans before the zoning board of appeals. The meeting had to be moved from town hall to the public safety building because of the turnout.

CVS representatives presented significantly revised plans for the drugstore, which is eyed for the parcel at the intersection of South Street and Randall Road, where a Mobil gasoline station and convenience store is located near the historic center of town. There is a vacant field behind the station that is also slated to be used for the drugstore. Under the revised plan, the pharmacy building would be located farther away from South Street and closer to Randall Road in the plaza. The gas station lot would be mostly for parking.

The CVS would resemble a Colonial building similar to the CVS in Foxboro.

Residents opposing the plans had argued too much variation from town bylaws was being sought, and drugstore representatives indicated they hope to ask for no waivers with the new plans, which were revised following feedback from residents and town officials.

It would be the first drugstore in town in several years, and many residents support the convenience of a local store. However, the pharmacy plans have sparked some opposition, with signs cropping up around town and letters contending the character of the town would be tarnished.

Most who spoke at the hearing, though, simply had questions. The town's previous pharmacy, Patriot Pharmacy, was located in King Philip Plaza for over a decade, until abruptly shutting its doors in January 2003.

The hearing was continued to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on Oct. 8 in the community room of the public safety building.
