Faceoff for VP

Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, left, and Sen. Partisans look forward to debate tonight
More than 50 million Americans tuned into last week's presidential debate, but local partisans said the clash they are waiting for comes tonight when the vice presidential contenders go at it.

The vice presidential debate has the potential to be more entertaining and explosive because of the personalities of the candidates, Republican Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska and U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del.

"The debate I'm really looking forward to is Thursday," said state Rep. Jay Barrows, R-Mansfield.

The big question is which Palin will show up.

Will it be the brassy speaker who electricified the Republican National Convention, or the unsteady newcomer who stumbled through an interview with CBS News last week?
Late night talk shows and "Saturday Night Live" have taken to mocking Palin's lack of experience and inability to answer some questions.

The other wild card is Biden, who has superior experience, but who is prone to verbal blunders.

Last week, he claimed President Franklin Roosevelt went on national television when the stock market crashed at the start of the Great Depression. Roosevelt was not president at the time, and TV was a largely experimental technology.

Barrows said he is confident Palin can handle the pressure.

"This will give the country a chance to see why John McCain picked her," he said.

Danielle Fish of Mansfield, a member of the Republican State Committee, said she cannot wait to watch the debate and believes interest is high because of Palin.

"No matter if you agree with Gov. Palin on the issues, there is no denying her natural charisma and charm," Fish said.

"She leads a relatively normal life, everyday challenges we all face with kids and family. Yet, here she is running for vice president," she said.

"It's fascinating. People want to learn more about her, hear directly from her. This debate is the first live opportunity for voters since the Republican convention. And of course, see if she answers everyone's question - is she up to being vice president? I think she'll deliver."

Paul Grady, chairman of the Democratic City Committee, said Biden is an accomplished debater - if he can avoid gaffes.
Even though Palin has struggled recently, Grady said the expectations for her will be so low that she will "squeeze by."

Susan Blais of the Attleboro Republican City Committee said she considers tonight's debate "make or break" for Palin.

"I think she is going to do fine," Blais said, although she admitted she was nervous for Palin.

Ellen Parker, a member of the Democratic City Committee, said Palin has proven she is good at giving a "canned speech," but the debate will help determine if she can think on her feet.

"I'm anxious to see her answer questions and go up against Joe Biden," Parker said.

National commentators are predicting the vice presidential debate - being held at Washington University in St. Louis - will get higher television ratings than the forum between Barack Obama and John McCain. The debate begins at 9 p.m. and will be broadcast on the four major networks.

Some compare the debate to a stock car race, with spectators waiting to see if anyone crashes.

" Let the games begin. Let's see if Gwen Ifill can check her distaste for Palin at the door and be an objective moderator. If she can't, the whole debate process should be scrapped. There are too many liberals (80 - 90%) in the press corps and you can't find many journalists anymore; they are partisans. I can think of four who could fill the bill, but one's dead (Tim Russert). The other three are Jim Lehrer, Chris Wallace and Brit Hume. I challenge anyone to show me a partisan streak in Wallace and while Hume is a Republican, his debate performance has always been exemplary. Yet unless the debate is on Fox, Wallace and Hume are ignored. "

" Wow Spam, I think you're spot on there . . . the funny thing is, you're in the minority in your ability to see beyond this nonsense. Most folks will get their "view" of the debate spoon-fed by this ridiculous thing we call media, which will be totally skewed and biased. "

" I believe that everyone expecting a poor showing is being led to such an expectation by that time-honoured practice (by both parties) of lowering debate expectations to the point where everyone expects nothing good so even a mediocre performance seems terrific compared with the expectation. Biden may bloviate and Palin will delivered her prepped canned answers in sound-bites and neither will truly say anything of substance because the American public has little-to-no interest in actually following substantive debate and discussion. We are a nation of short-attention-span entertainment feeders and anything that takes more than ten minutes to get through starts making us squirm and long for a commercial break... "

" One more point, the moderator of the debate is the author of a pro-Obama book. "

" No one really wins these debates. They are shows that are only used to give the press something to talk about and the women on the View ammunition for sniping.
I agree that Palin should have been better prepared but I think she was asked a lot of questions that would not have been asked of Biden or any other VP nominee. (Morning after pill, Roe v. Wade).
If Biden can keep his facts straight and not talk about how Roosevelt was on TV or General Grant reporting his victory on D-Day with a text message he should be okay. Okay may be enough to make him the winner in the media's opinion. (The media are a fair as Eastern European gymnastics judges.)

ricknkim -- good job injecting the IBP, it made my day. "

" I think that Gov. Sarah Palin has the most to gain politically from tonight's debate. I think that she is an excellent debater and shows some real confidence as well. She will win tonight's debate against that old tax and spend liberal windbag Joe Biden. Gov. Palin has more to offer the country and she will help John McCain win in November. "

" Yeah, can't wait . . . 2 hugely-scripted fools representing the ugly and uglier political parties debating issues without giving any specifics. Should be great.

As for Palin - I'm dissapointed. I watched the Couric interview (Couric is as big a fool) and can't believe how un-prepared Palin was. She looked like Kate Jackson, unable to articulate anything off her script. So now I have 4 political leaders vying for Pres/VP that are as useful as an IBP without tennants. Great "

" Did Katie Couric ask Biden about the morning after pill or what Biden reads? (I know Biden reads other peoples' speeches.)
Although a politician has to have a thick skin I can't believe how much the press has attacked and mocked Gov Palin. Because she's a conservative woman she has been the target of everything from the usual NY Times unsubstantiated allegations to the back stabbing of that hen house known as "The View"/ "

" wait, isnt Palin the joke of the country right now? I can't wait for her to be humiliated like she was when she was interviewed by Katie Couric. Couric was even taking it easy on her. It's really going to great.
For those who haven't seen the Couric Interview...Enjoy

" I can't wait for Biden to question her experience. Granted she was just a mayor and not a community organizer before becoming governor. This gives her more real executive experience than anyone on either ticket. (No running a campaign full of yes men and groupies like Obama has is not executive experience.)
Of course the liberal media want it both ways. They don't hesitate to attack Palin's alleged lack of experience and McCains's age. However they give Obama a free pass on his lack of experience and Biden's age is ignored. "
