VOLLEYBALL: Close doesn't count for KP

CANTON - In Hockomock League volleyball play, the first-place Bulldogs of Canton High proved too much for King Philip on Friday night, taking three close games by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-23.
KP (3-6 Hockomock, 3-7) actually had the lead in all three games but never got over the hump. Meg Cronin was solid for the Warriors with four service points, 10 assists and a kill while Cara Daly had a team-high seven kills, 15 digs and two blocks while Tori Mosolgo added three kills, five service points (including an ace) and three blocks. Also, Caitlin Stetter had four service points, an ace, three kills and two blocks.
The Warriors visit Sharon (5 p.m.) next Tuesday.
Case 3, Seekonk 0
SEEKONK - In South Coast Conference play, the Cardinals swept past Seekonk by scores of 25-19, 25-9 and 25-17.
Despite the loss, Seekonk got solid defensive play from Leanne Poirier, who had 14 digs, and Samantha Howart, who also had 16 digs. The Warriors (2-8) visit Greater New Bedford next Friday night.
Barnstable 3, Attleboro 0
ATTLEBORO - In a battle for the top spot in the Old Colony League, the Red Raiders ran away from the Bombardiers. Barnstable (4-0 OCL) took home 25-9, 25-15 and 25-16 victories.
For AHS, junior Taylor Whaley had 10 assists. The Bombardiers (6-4, 3-1 OCL) are at Durfee on Monday.
Norton 3, Ashland 1
NORTON - After dropping the first game of the Tri-Valley League matchup 25-10, the Lancers roarded back and took the next three by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-19.
Shannon Doyle paced Norton with her hitting while Marissa Marvel was also solid at the net. Kelly Allen had the best all-around game of any Lancer as she had both strong serving and hitting. "Our communication after the first game really improved," noted Norton coach Lindsay Nastri, whose Lancers (4-5) visit Millis on Monday.
