CROSS COUNTRY: Feehan, Mansfield boys win titles

Shayne Collins of Mansfield

BOSTON - A week after taking home titles at the New Balance Invitational Meet, the Bishop Feehan High School boys' and girls' cross country teams earned some more hardware Saturday.

The Shamrock boys won the MSTCA Bay State Invitational Division 2 team results, edging out their newfound non-league rival in Seekonk. Bishop Feehan, led by Bobby McShane's fifth-place finish, had just enough depth to beat Seekonk, led by Johnny Gregorek's second-place finish. The Shamrocks ended up with 103 points to Seekonk's 106 while Walpole was a distant third place.

"We had some guys out because of SAT's but other guys stepped it up," said Bishop Feehan coach Bob L'Homme.

McShane ran a 16:43 while teammate Dave Phipps clocked a 17:14 for 14th place. Also cracking the top 25 for Bishop Feehan was Nate Bowditch (17:31), who was 24th.

For Seekonk, Gregorek ran a time of 16:28 while Sam Spencer finished ninth at 17:07 and Nathan Larrimer was 26th at 17:31.

In the Division 1 boys' race, Mansfield didn't disappoint, overwhelming the field by 62 points. The Hornets had six players in the top 50 and ended up with 125 points while Amherst-Pelham was second at 187 and Whitman-Hanson was third at 195.

"It wasn't a perfect race, but it was a big win," noted Mansfield coach Julie Collins. "To win by over 60 points, and over Amherst-Pelham, that's outstanding."

The Hornets rode a slew of personal-best times to the win. Shayne Collins, who had the second-fastest time of any Mansfield runner ever clocked at Franklin Park, had a personal-best 16:18 for sixth place. Patrick Grimes (16:51) also had a PR for 25th place while Kevin Meagher broke 17 minutes (16:58) for 29th. Matt Hernon (17:07, 37th) and Brendan Boyle (17:14, 41st) also had personal-best times.

On the girls' side, Bishop Feehan followed up last weekend's win with another solid showing, taking second place in the Division 2 meet. The Shamrocks (71) had four runners in the top 20 but ended up six points behind winner Hamilton-Wenham (65).

Jen Thomas had another strong meet, finishing fourth at 19:19. Viviana Hanley was sixth at 19:23 while Anisa Arsenault was 11th at 20:06.

Seekonk's Jenny Salit cracked the top 15, finishing 13th in 20:11.
