Stone Soup pays tribute to Phil Ochs
In the counterculture movement of the 1960s, Phil Ochs was both a musical legend and spokesman for such causes as civil rights and opposition to the Vietnam War.
Stone Soup Coffeehouse will present a Phil Ochs song night with an all-star cast 8 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 50 Park Place, Pawtucket including the duo of Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino, John Flynn, David Roth and Greg Greenway. Each artist will perform one Ochs song and one original song. The format for the evening is largely "in the round" but enlivened by the artists often joining together to perform. Sonny Ochs, Phil's sister, hosts the song night, relating anecdotes and reflections on Ochs' life and legacy.
Ochs left more than 100 songs, including "Power and the Glory," "Bound for Glory," "Too Many Martyrs" and "What's That I Hear." His second album, "I Ain't Marching Anymore," was released in 1965, and by 1966 he was able to sell out Carnegie Hall for his solo concert. Most of Ochs' songs were very political, some humorous and some very serious.
Admission is $15.
Other venues:
E Reggae pioneers Toots and the Maytals will be performing at 8 p.m. Friday at Showcase Live at Patriot Place, Foxboro.
One or the originators of the genre, Toots and the Maytals are credited with coining the word "reggae" on their 1968 single "Do the Reggay." Until that time reggae was a dance fad in Jamaica and was not associated with the style of music played by bands we now consider reggae musicians.
Over the summer the band toured internationally, playing with superstars such as The Rolling Stones in Finland, Sweden and Denmark, Dave Matthews, Los Lonely Boys and Jimmy Buffet for two shows at Gillette Stadium. Tickets are $27.50 in advance or $30 day of show.
E Jayme Stone and Mansa Sissoko follow the roots of the banjo from Africa to Appalachia in a performance at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad St., Cumberland, R.I. Tickets are $14. For information visit www.riverfolk.org.
