Stimulus check deadline is today

ATTLEBORO - It's Oct. 15. Have you asked for your economic stimulus check yet?

If you haven't by today, you might be out of luck.

The city's council on aging and other senior citizen advocates are trying to make sure that everyone receives their federal rebate check.

The concern was triggered by a report from AARP, which estimated that thousands of senior citizens have not filed for their one-time payment from the government approved this spring by Congress and President Bush to help stimulate the economy.

Specifically, senior citizen advocates are looking for Social Security recipients who have not have filed for their rebate.

The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 provided for a minimum of $300 for individuals and $600 for married couples filing jointly, plus $300 for eligible children younger than 17, and for those who have at least $3,000 in qualifying income, including Social Security earnings. Social Security Disability income, known as SSI, does not qualify for the rebate.

Eligible people must apply for their economic stimulus check by today or they will be ineligible for the checks.

To do so, individuals must file a Form 1040A with the Internal Revenue Service, even if they do not normally have to file.

The city's council on aging is offering assistance today by calling 508-223-2235.

The council on aging also suggests that people visit the AARP Web site at www.aarp.org/taxaide, the Internal Revenue Service Web site at www.irs.gov or call the IRS rebate hotline at 886-234-2942.
