Top Headlines Crawford "Chick" Calderwood, 87 FOXBORO - Crawford Douglas "Chick" Calderwood, 87, died on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 at Caritas Norwood Hospital surrounded by the comfort of his loving family. He was the son of the late Sherman H. and Annie E. (Crawford) Calderwood. Chick was born in Quincy on March 25 1921. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He and his wife Phyllis were married at the United Church of Christ in Walpole on May 31, 1941. He has been a Foxboro resident for over 67 years. Chick was a retired foreman in the flow valve department at the Foxboro Company and was a member of the Foxboro Company 10- and 25-year clubs. He was a member and church leader for the Bethany Congregational Church in Foxboro for over 60 years. He was a member of the St. Alban's Lodge A.F. and A.M. in Foxboro, and was also a member of the American Legion Lawrence Foster Post 93 in Foxboro and the VFW Post in Long Island, Maine. Chick was an avid boater and enjoyed spending time with his family at his vacation home on Long Island, Maine. He also enjoyed visiting shut-ins for Bethany Congregational Church, where he was a former trustee and mission outreach member. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis E. (Wilber) Calderwood; and the loving father of Jean L. and her husband Charles Healy of Foxboro, James D. and his wife Linda of Berlin, and Diane and her husband Jack Mulvee, Frank E. and his wife Daniela and Linda M. and her husband Paul Marszalkowski, all of Foxboro. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Margaret Saunders, 78 FOXBORO - Margaret A. (Molway) Saunders, 78, died peacefully at her home in Foxboro on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Alfonso and Margaret Molway. Marge was born in Boston on Dec. 16, 1929 and was a graduate of Hyde Park High School. She earned her counselor certificate at Stone Hill College in Easton and was a substance abuse counselor at the former Southwood Community Hospital in Norfolk. She retired in 1994. Marge helped many people in our community over the years fight alcohol and drug abuse. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She was the beloved mother of Paul Burke and his wife Susan of Mansfield, Kellie and her husband Gerry Cronin of Foxboro and the late John and Ronald Burke; and the devoted grandmother of Eric, Keith, Danielle, Kristin, Jason, Brandon and Nicholas. Martha Souza, 91 SEEKONK - Martha Helena (MacCormac) Souza, 91, of Vista Court, Seekonk, died on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at the Golden Living Center-Garden Place, formerly Pleasant Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Attleboro, where she resided. She was the wife of the late Antone Cabral Souza, to whom she was married on Sept. 16, 1967 and entered into eternal rest on May 9, 1993. Born in Providence on March 15, 1917, she was a daughter of the late John F. and Helena F. (Sexton) MacCormac. She was raised and educated in Warwick, R.I., and resided in the Seekonk and Attleboro area for more than 50 years. Mrs. Souza was employed as an assembler at Texas Instruments in Attleboro for several years prior to her retirement in 1978. She was a member of the Assembly of God in South Attleboro and enjoyed square dancing in earlier years. Mrs. Souza leaves a son-in-law, John F. Adamonis of Seekonk; two grandchildren, Jason J. Adamonis and Vanessa H. Adamonis, both of Seekonk; a great-grandchild, Morgan H. Adamonis of Seekonk; and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Helena A. (Moran) Adamonis, and was the sister of the late Helen LaFlamme, Arthur MacCormac, Paul MacCormac, John Dennis MacCormac and Francis MacCormac. Funeral services and burial will be private. Robert Cassidy, 75 ATTLEBORO - Robert Sterling Cassidy, 75, of Foley Street, Attleboro, died unexpectedly on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Fla., where he was combining work and vacation. He was the husband of Dora Marie (Weir) Cassidy, to whom he was married on Aug. 24, 1957. Born in Attleboro on June 13, 1933 on the dining room table of the family homestead, he was the son of the late Edward and Helena M. (Nihan) Cassidy. He was raised and educated in his native community, where he was a 1951 graduate of Attleboro High School. He remained a lifelong resident of the City of Attleboro and resided in the same house his entire life - quiet a fact, for a realtor! Following high school, Mr. Cassidy earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from Boston University in 1954. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1954 to 1956, during the Korean War, later devoting six years to the Army Reserves. In 1956, Mr. Cassidy began his career with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and was charged with the responsibility of opening the Attleboro Public Welfare Office. He ended his employment with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as the assistant to the commissioner of the Department of Public Welfare in 1972. During his tenure with the welfare office, he obtained his real estate license in 1968. Mr. Cassidy was the founder, owner and operator of Bob Cassidy Real Estate in Attleboro since 1972. As a realtor he was a member of the former Attleboro Board of Realtors, which later merged with the Northern Bristol County Board of Realtors. He served as a member of the legislative committee, treasurer, vice president and president of the association and was named Realtor of the Year multiple times. He served as a member of the Attleboro Housing Authority from 1965 to 1971, was a member of the City of Attleboro Personnel Board from 1968 until 1971 and served as a City of Attleboro city councilor representing Ward 3 from 1972-1973. Mr. Cassidy fought against rent control during the 1980s and was the former owner, operator and manager of the Oakhill Family Park in Attleboro from 1985 until 2006. He founded the Attleboro Scholarship Fund for the Class of 1951 and was a former member of the Attleboro Rotary Club. He was as an ardent horticulturalist. He was most proud of the roses he lovingly grew and cultivated, and was a member of the Rose Society. In 2003, Mr. Cassidy and members of his family traveled to Shannon, Ireland and took a 16-day trip that culminated in Dublin. He had also enjoyed trips to Nova Scotia, Canada and Spain. Mr. Cassidy was proud of his Irish ancestry and heritage and enjoyed traveling to Ireland with his family. The local Cassidy clan joined a larger Cassidy clan for a reunion held in Fermanaugh, Northern Ireland in 2005. On that same trip, the family visited England and Scotland. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Attleboro. Mr. Cassidy treasured the time spent amidst his family. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and skiing with his family and would organize an annual fishing trip out of Provincetown harbor. He loved time spent on Cape Cod and trips to view the colors of autumn in Maine during September and October. Recently, he started learning Spanish and was eagerly anticipating becoming fluent in a second language. In recent years, he excelled at photography and was currently nominated for an award for his artistic abilities in the field. From sunsets in Florida to the New England coastline, he was always able to capture a special moment on film. He was planning on entering his works in the Wickford Art Festival in Rhode Island next year. In addition to his wife of 51 years, he leaves three children, Robert E. Cassidy of Attleboro, Jan-Marie Cassidy of Attleboro and Lee Sterling Cassidy of Seekonk. He was "Papa" to Conner Cassidy of Attleboro and Casey Cassidy-Thibault of Attleboro, and the uncle of several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Gertrude Martin, Alvin Cassidy, Joseph Cassidy, Helen Johnson and Donald Cassidy. Frieda Dorr, 98 ATTLEBORO - Frieda Dorr, 98, of George Street, Attleboro, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 at the Golden Living Center, formerly Ridgewood Court Nursing Home, in Attleboro. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Dorr, who passed away in 1978. Born Frieda Weitz in Boston on Sept. 28, 1909, Frieda was a daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret (Apfel) Weitz. She was raised and educated in Boston. A resident of Attleboro since 1978, Mrs. Dorr was employed as a cafeteria worker at Attleboro High School for several years until retiring. Frieda was also a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Attleboro. Mrs. Dorr is survived by her beloved daughter, Barbara A. Lynch of Attleboro; a loving son, Joseph R. Dorr Sr. and his wife Anne of Chelmsford; a daughter-in-law, Grace Dorr of North Attleboro; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. John Tamer, 53 SEEKONK - John Peter Tamer, 53, of Fall River Avenue, died unexpectedly at home on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008. Born in Providence on Aug. 25, 1955, he was a son of Peter and Annabelle (Niles) Tamer of Seekonk. John was an avid musician and was well known for his guitar skills. In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his children, Jillian Tamer and Peter Tamer and his sister, Kathy Vieira, all of Seekonk. His funeral will be held on Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway, East Providence, R.I., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt.
