Top Headlines James O'Connell Jr., 56 MANSFIELD - James F. O'Connell Jr., 56, of Mansfield, formerly of Brockton, passed away on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of Margaret J. (Fortune) O'Connell, to whom he was wed on May 10, 1980. Born in Brockton on Feb. 4, 1952, he was a loving son of Abbie F. (Creeden) O'Connell of Brockton and the late James F. O'Connell Sr. Jim grew up in Brockton, was educated in the Brockton public schools and was a 1970 graduate of Brockton High School. He furthered his education and was a 1974 graduate of Stonehill College in Easton and received his master's degree in 1977 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Mr. O'Connell was a retired purchasing agent, having worked for 22 years at the Praxair Company in Waltham, retiring in 2006. He had previously been employed from 1979 to 1984 at the H.E. Harris Company in South Boston. He loved spending time with his cherished family, was an avid stamp collector and was involved with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 17 in Mansfield. Jim had made his home in Mansfield for the past 28 years, and was formerly of Brockton. In addition to his mother Abbie and wife Margaret of 28 years, he is survived by his devoted children, Daniel J. O'Connell, Alice H. O'Connell and Edmund J. O'Connell, all of Mansfield. Memorial services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited, will be held on Friday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield. Visiting hours will be held prior to services on Friday, Oct. 10 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home. Donald Wells II, 54 SHARON - Donald Dustin "Dusty" Wells II of Sharon, where he lived since 2000, died Saturday morning, Oct. 4, 2008 at his home. He was 54. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of Edna (Spurgeon) Richardson of Franklin, and the late Donald D. Wells and David O. Richardson. Dusty had worked for the SNARC Placement workshop in Norwood, and formerly had worked at the 99 restaurant and McDonald's. He was a former 15-year resident of Norfolk, and enjoyed mini-golf, bowling and the Green Bay Packers, as well as having a great sense of humor. He was also a former member of the Norfolk Subordinate Grange, having aquired the sixth degree of the Grange. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his siblings: Timothy Richardson and his wife Debra of Algonquin, Ill., Zebbra Sue Busic and her husband Richard of Thornville, Ohio, and Tamara Dee Webster and her husband Reed of Plainville. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Norfolk Federated Church, 1 Union St., Norfolk. Burial will be held at a later date in Warsaw, Ind. Suzanne Smith, 84 BRIDGEWATER, CONN. - Suzanne Blackinton Smith, 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008 at home with her children at her side. Born in Attleboro to Shirley and Ruth (Fowler) Blackinton, she was the wife for 61 years of the late Roswell "Duke" Smith. A 1942 graduate of Attleboro High School, she attended LaSalle Junior College. She lived in Attleboro until moving to Cape Cod in the 1980s, and in 2007 she moved to her daughter's home in Bridgewater, Conn. An avid golfer, Mrs. Smith was a women's club champion at Highland Country Club in Attleboro and was an active golfing member at Pocasset Golf Club until 2000. Over the years, she also enjoyed tennis, skiing, bowling, bridge and knitting. She is survived by her children, Susan and her husband Denny Galvin of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Pocasset, Carolyn and her husband Robert Hacker of Bridgewater, Conn., and Thomas H. Smith and his wife Annie of Newtown, Conn.; her grandchildren, Jennifer Gattie, Jaclyn Gaddy and Andrew, Brian, Jason and Daniel Smith; her great-grandchildren, Bram and Major Gattie and Aaliya Smith; her nephew, Michael Specht; and her nieces, Janet Trudell and Shirley Pierce. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Priscilla Specht. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Bridgewater Congregational Church in Bridgewater, Conn. John Shaw, 71 WARREN, R.I. - John Edward Workman Shaw, 71, died peacefully at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro on Sept. 16, 2008. He was a resident of Warren, R.I. He is survived by his wife, Andrea Leyare Shaw, a retired Attleboro teacher. John spent many hours working with the kindergarten children at Thatcher School in Attleboro.
