GOLF: Mansfield clinches share of league title
EASTON - Unbeaten and untied thus far, you had to figure that a Hockomock League title was in the sites for the Mansfield High School golf team.
Well, mission accomplished Friday afternoon as the Hornets had seven players break 40 in a 150-160 victory over Oliver Ames at Pine Oaks.
With the win, Mansfield improved to 13-0 overall and clinched at least a share of a tie for first place in the Hockomock. Mansfield still has three league matches left and the next closest team in the league has three losses, meaning only a late-season swoon would result in a co-championship. And there's no reason to expect that with the way the Hornets have been striking the ball and finishing their putts.
"It was a pretty good day, no real low scores, but we had seven of our eight guys in the 30's and that's what a coach is looking for, that consistency," said Mansfield coach Sean Kelly.
Matt DeGiorgio and Tom Grant led the Hornets with their rounds of 37, while Sean McHugh and Adam Bourque both fired rounds of 38.
Next up for Mansfield is Sharon, home on Tuesday.
And speaking of undefeated teams, BISHOP FEEHAN continued its impressive run with a 244-277 road victory over Somerset at Swansea Country Club. The Shamrocks also can do no worse than a first-place tie in the Eastern Athletic Conference as they improved to 5-0 in league play. At 11-0 overall, Feehan has a tester on tap Monday against Bishop Stang on the road. As for Friday's match, Dan Collins and Mike Delude were low men for the Shamrocks as they both shot 39's at the par-36 course.
In Hockomock League play, Canton got the better of KING PHILIP at Blue Hills CC, 175-183. When the team first met earlier in the season the Bulldogs pulled out a narrow, two-stroke win, but the home-course advantage made for some breathing room Friday. Brian Sugrne (44) and Cam Bushway (45) were low men for KP while junior Kyle Leavitt had a medalist round of 40 for the Bulldogs. King Philip (1-10) visits North Attleboro Monday at Locust Valley GC.
Also in the Hockomock League, NORTH ATTLEBORO pinned a 21-stroke victory on Stoughton at Locust Valley, rolling by a 159-180 score. Brian Doherty was medalist on the day with his round of 38. Also for the Red Rocketeers, Greg Reddington had a 39, Jeff Chandler and Dylan Estrella both fired rounds of 41. North Attleboro (5-8) hosts King Philip on Monday.
