Accent on community service

ATTLEBORO - Hyman Fine Elementary School has launched a program to support positive behavior through weekly assemblies and school and community service projects.

The program, called Second Step, helps students develop and practice social skills as well as problem-solving and cooperation.

Every Friday at 2:20 p.m., the school holds assemblies that address several facets of the program, including grade-level community service projects. A number of speakers and experts have been contacted to share their expertise.

An assembly is scheduled today at which pupils will present their projects. Projects are: Grade 1, community outreach; grade 2, food drive; grade 3, we deliver; and grade 4, recycling.

On Oct. 24, a postal service representative will speak to third-graders and on Oct. 31, fourth-graders will be cleaning and beautifying the school campus by picking up trash, mulching and planting perennials. On Nov. 7, Mayor Kevin Dumas will address the second grade about the importance of the food drive to the city. A member of the military will visit with first-graders Nov. 14.
