GOLF: Qualifying eludes MHS

EASTON - Having completed their Hockomock League match play season unbeaten and prepared to put Mansfield High on the map as one of the premier golf teams in the Commonwealth this season, the Hornets went astray a few too many times Monday at the Easton Country Club.

The Hornets missed out on qualifying for the MIAA State Division 2 Tournament by two shots, and to Hockomock League rival Franklin nonetheless. Wellesley captured the team title with a team score of 312, with the Panthers second at 326 and the Hornets third at 328.

"We played there last Wednesday, we practiced there Sunday, we did everything that we could, but the kids just had a bad day," sighed Mansfield coach Sean Kelley. "It was terribly disappointing."

While the Hornets will not be advancing as a team, Hornet senior captain Nick Cruise advanced to the MIAA Division 2 State Tournament with an 8-over-par round of 79.

** NORTON junior Peter Danko shot a 6-over-par round of 77 at the Wentworth Hills CC to qualify for the MIAA Division 3 State Tournament, which will be held at Shaker Hills CC in Harvard. Danko was one of 13 players out of the Division 3 field assembled in Plainville to advance, having a birdie on the par-5 No. 14 hole. ** Also advancing to the state-wide level of competition is BISHOP FEEHAN junior Mike Pierard, who carded an 8-over-par round of 78 at Wentworth Hills. The Shamrocks, however, finished seventh overall as a team.

** At the Division 1 Qualifying Tournament, ATTLEBORO was unable to become one of the three qualifying teams from the field of 11. In addition, none of the Bombardiers qualified for further individual play as well. Tyler Dias carded the low AHS round, a 10-over-par 82.

** At the Division 2 Qualifying Tournament, NORTH ATTLEBORO senior captain Ryan Doherty missed the cut for the individual tournament by one shot with a 9-over-par round of 80.

** At the Division 3 Qualifying Tournament at Wentworth Hills, FOXBORO's Brian Kronmiller shot a 10-over-par 81 as the Warrior medalist, but neither he, nor his team, will be advancing. Twenty teams and 135 players participated.
