FIELD HOCKEY: Mansfield gets past Foxboro

MANSFIELD - Erin Keogh scored two first-half goals and freshman Meg Carroll scored two second-half goals as the Mansfield High field hockey team blasted rival Foxboro, 4-1, Monday in a Hockomocjk League match.

Keogh converted a penalty corner from Molly Gilmore five minutes into the match for Mansfield's go-ahead goal and then tallied again in the 11th minute, off of a feed from Molly Keogh.

"The damage was done," said Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri of the Warriors (8-6-1) being unable to recover. Not just that, but Mansfield totaled 10 of its 11 penalty corners during the first half and forced Foxboro goalie Callie McLaughlin to make 27 saves overall. "Offensively, we didn't follow through and our recovery on defense wasn't great."

Carroll scored twice within a three-minute span with just over 10 minutes left in the second half. In the meantime, Mansfield sweeper Mila Elich and left back Katie Jenkins were responsible for stifling Foxboro time and again just outside the penalty circle.

"Foxboro applied pressure, they had some pretty good shots on goal," said MHS coach Theresa DeGirolamo. "Those first 15 minutes (Foxboro had four of its eight penalty corners), we were playing some serious defense." Meg Sweeney put Foxboro on the scoreboard at the eight-minute mark of the second half, converting a Mandy Butterworth pass. Mansfield (9-3-2) entertains Franklin Wednesday, while Foxboro, still needing one point to qualify for the MIAA Tournament, travels to Oliver Ames (6 p.m. start time).

Attleboro 2, North Attleboro 0

ATTLEBORO - Inner Kelly Monson set up both Bombardier tallies as AHS won the non-league match and qualified for the MIAA Tournament.

Haley Gagnon put the Bombardiers (8-5-2) ahead in the 16th minute of the match off of a feed from Monson. Then, 30 seconds into the second half, Monson set up Jordan Childs for a breakaway Bombardier goal. Autumn Ivory totaled 12 saves in goal for North (2-12-1), while Kendra Sczuroski had seven saves for the shutout in goal for AHS.

The Bombardiers totaled 10 penalty corners, eight in the first half, while North had seven, six during the second half.

"We went right at them," said AHS coach Sue Hamilton, the Bombardiers and Rocketeers having played to a 1-all tie earlier in the season. AHS entertains Bridgewater-Raynham today in an OCL match, while North entertains Canton Wednesday.

Dighton-Rehoboth 3, Bourne 0

REHOBOTH - Jenna Rocha scored twice and Brittney Noons pitched her eighth shutout of the season as the Falcons moved back into a tie for first place in the South Coast Conference.

Dighton-Rehoboth improved to 9-1-3 in the SCC and is in a flat-footed tie for first with Old Rochester. Both teams have one league game left on the schedule this Wednesday, D-R at Bourne and Old Rochester up against Fairhaven. The last time Old Rochester and Fairhaven met, the two teams ended up tying. Another tie, or a Bulldog loss, would give the Falcons (9-2-3) the SCC title alone, assuming they can beat Bourne again.

Rocha scored from Alexa Cowell late in the first half (4:26 left), then Kayla Cartin (from Sarah Genrdon, 26 minutes left) and Rocha (From Haley Jackson, 13 left) tacked on second-half goals. Noons had to make only two saves as she got defensive help from Abby Woodard and Chelsea Brown.
