NORTH ATTLEBORO - Senior midfielder and captain Sam Ocel scored the go-ahead goal and set up the match-winning goal as the MIAA Tournament-bound North Attleboro High boys' soccer team held off Sharon, 2-1, Monday in a Hockomock League match.
Ocel scored off of a feed from Justin Crear in the 25th minute, but Sharon netted the equalizer a minute later. Ocel set up senior Matt Begin for the Rocketeers' game-winner 15 minutes into the second half, sending a cross out of the left wing into the penalty box area.
"We came out strong," said North coach Steve Santos as both Crear and Begin hit the Sharon goalpost with shots in the first five minutes.
Colin Goodwin finished with five saves in net for North Attleboro (9-3-1 Hockomock, 10-3-1), which visits Foxboro Thursday.
Seekonk 1, Bourne 1
BOURNE - In South Coast Conference play, Mike DaSilva's prayer with time running out was answered as the Warriors picked up another point in hopes of qualifying for the MIAA Tournament.
DaSilva's blast from way out ricocheted off of a Bourne player and into the net, with just two seconds left to play, giving Seekonk the much-needed point. At 6-6-3 overall, the Warriors need three points in their three remaining matches to make the postseason.
"We had a lot of good chances but didn't put anything in. They had gotten a goal off a corner where the ball was in the goal box and no one cleared it out. To get a goal with time running out like that, yeah, it was a good tie," said Seekonk coach Jeff Creamer, whose team hosts Apponequet Wednesday.
Aris Santiago (stopper) and Paul Hindle (sweeper) both played well for Seekonk.
Tri-County 4, Norfolk Aggie 1
WALPOLE - Junior Drew Flamenco scored a pair of goals as the MIAA Tournament-bound Cougars ran past Norfolk Agricultural in a Mayflower League match. Flamenco scored Tri-County's go-ahead goal in the 15th minute and netted his second goal, the Cougars' third, in the 48th minute.
Cullen Witherall, in the 45th minute, and Jake Crowley, on a superb bicycle volley kick after the Norfolk Aggie goalie had punched the ball out atop the penalty box area, also scored second half goals for Tri-County (10-3 Mayflower, 10-4), which hosts Avon Wednesday.
Stoughton 1, Foxboro 0
STOUGHTON - The Black Knights scored midway through the first half of the Hockomock League match and held off the Warriors.
Foxboro generated four shots and had two corner kicks, "but we couldn't string anything together," said Warrior coach Pat Nash. Foxboro goalie Sean McLaughlin had to make just three saves, while the Warrior backline, led by Ahmed Kafel, did a nice job of keeping Stoughton out of the penalty box area.
The Warriors, 5-6-3 and still in line for a postseason berth, host North Attleboro Thursday.
Girls' Soccer
Dighton-Rehoboth 5, Wareham 0
REHOBOTH - Meg DeCastro and Kathleen Smith each scored two goals as the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High girls' soccer team downed Wareham, 5-0, Monday in a South Coast Conference match at the Bliss Soccer Complex.
DeCastro scored what proved to be the match-winning goal for the Falcons with just 10 seconds left in the first half, converting a through ball from Samantha Sylvia.
"We were a little sluggish, we came out a little tentative," said D-R coach Jeff White, whose Falcons are now 13-2-1 overall, 13-0-1 in the SCC. Goalie Kelsey Gay (four saves) and sophomore sweeper Danielle Flores enabled D-R to notch its seventh shutout over the past 10 matches.
DeCastro netted her second goal in the 48th minute, from Lindsay Doane. Smith tallied second half goals at the 50- and 71-minute marks, both on partial breakaways. In between, Suzie Newman gave the Falcons a 4-0 lead in the 62nd minute off a direct kick by DeCastro. The Falcons travel to second-place Bourne Wednesday.
North Attleboro 1, Sharon 0
SHARON - "We did a good job of controlling the ball," related North coach Geoff Burgess as the Rocketeers held off Sharon in the Hockomock League match. Brini Varetimos scored the match-winner for North (3-7-4) in the 16th minute of the match on a cross from Lauren Goldberg.
North goalie Kelsey Viens had to make just three saves for the shutout, aided defensively by midfielders Shannon Morse and Emma O'Neil. The Rocketeers must win all four of their remaining matches in order to qualify for postseason play. The Rocketeers host Foxboro Thursday.
Foxboro 0, Stoughton 0
FOXBORO - The Warriors had a flurry of opportunities in the final minutes but couldn't convert, tying visiting Stoughton 0-0 on Senior Night in a Hockomock League matchup. Gianna and Livie Roma played well on defense for Foxboro while Rachel Jamieson created opportunities up top but the Warriors couldn't find the back of the net.
Foxboro, now 6-5-3, needs three points in its final four games to advance to postseason play. The Warriors travel to North Attleboro on Thursday.
Bourne 5, Seekonk 0
SEEKONK - Bryana Chase scored three goals as Bourne ran past Seekonk in a South Coast Conference match. The Canalmen scored twice within the first 11 minutes of the match and held a 3-0 lead by halftime.
"We had good possession for good chunks of the time," said Seekonk coach Tom Crowley, whose Warriors had 12 shots on goal. Seekonk (2-11-2) visits Apponequet Wednesday.
Diman Voke 2, Tri-County 1
FRANKLIN - Diman Voke avenged a 6-3 loss to the Cougars earlier in the season and created a tie for first place with Tri-County atop the Mayflower League's Small School Division. Diman tied the match in the 15th minute and scored the winner in the 27th minute.
T-C sophomore striker Erica Jonasson of Wrentham netted her 33rd goal of the season, blasting a direct kick from 30 yards out to put the Cougars ahead in the 12th minute. The Cougars were foiled on a half-dozen other prime scoring chances, four at point-blank range. Danielle Higgins had five saves in goal for Tri-County (8-4-1), which visits Old Colony Regional today.
