Mock vote is Dem landslide among teens

Barack Obama would be the next president of the United States if it were up to students at two local high schools.

Just over 74 percent of the 703 students voting in a mock election at Attleboro High School voted for the Democratic nominee, while Republican John McCain polled 17.2 percent.

AHS students rated the economy the most important issue in the election, followed by energy and the environment and homeland security.

The students cast their ballots online in a nationwide poll conducted by the Youth Leadership initiative. Nationwide, Obama was chosen by 60 percent of students against only 35.5 percent for McCain.

Obama was the choice of 64 percent of students at North Attleboro High School in the National Student/Parent Mock Election. Republican John McCain got 28 percent of the vote.

The mock election, which was organized by the University of Arizona, was locally administered by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.

North Attleboro history teachers Sean Mulkerrins and Kathy Wilkerson coordinated the voting at the high school. Students cast ballots online during their history classes.

A total of 1,015 North Attleboro students voted in the election.
